Future….?
There was some hope that the Wilgena Pub at the railway town of Tarcoola in South Australia would re-open on the 1st of July 2009. I took this in August & the population of the town was about 5 people. Everything was closed & falling into disrepair. The Grand Teton is truly as remarkable as it seems in images, and every shift in the weather or season shows yet another side of it many facets. I had driven by the curve of bleached grass many times, and finally called to get permission to drive onto the private property to take this shot. Canon 40D, 22, 1/13, focal length 60mm. Best Description of This Image from Whalegeek, March 2009: / “Sinuous meanderings culminating in jagged rocky peaks…you captured a memorable counterpoint between soft and hard shapes that lends great interest to your photo, drawing the viewer’s eyes to your subject.” Thank you whalegeek! I am not an architect, and after taking this photograph in the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C., I had trouble finding the term for this circular opening between two floors. I asked several attendants but no one knew the architectural term for it. Finally I was directed to a young man walking down the hall, he took one look at the photo on my camera and said, “Oh, that’s an oculus.” As I struggled with how to spell “oculus”, he politely told me how to spell it and then went on to say “oculus means round, it is Latin for the word eye, and as an architectural term it is basically anything that is round that you can see through, such as a round window, or this circular cut between two floors.” I thanked him and started to leave but a bewildered look came over his face. “Wait a second”, he said, “that is not an oculus, now that I think about it, that’s an . . . “ but before he could finish the sentence someone told him he was wanted down in the cafeteria where he worked, so he hastened away and I was left befuddled. When I got home I looked up the word “oculus” and I think that is what this is a photograph of, but then again . . . Thank you to the groups “Canon DSLR”, “Featured Only” and “ImageWriting” for featuring this photograph. Camera: Canon Rebel XTi 400D
This magnificent male leopard was perched on a termite mound, barely 50 mtrs from a pair of male lions on a baby elephant kill in the Okavango Delta. They all knew one another was there. When the tension became too much, one of lions dragged the rest of the kill into a thicket to escape the prying eyes of the leopard. The leopard got up to get a better view and wait his chance to grab a few scraps. / Featured in FAUNA, FLORA, LANDSCAPES AND ARCHITECTURE OF SOUTH AFRICA, Indigenous to East & Southern Africa and Featured Only

As an artist, I feel this is my best work. It is a self-portrait that leads off into the future, painted years ago in what I would now call my dark period. My life has changed a lot since then, and I have overcome many of the dark fears and subconscious memories, many of which are still hidden from my waking life. There is a lot of symbolism here. And, enough so that for once I will just shut my mouth and let you read it as you see it. I still enjoy seeing its design, attention to detail, and even if dark, it’s clear light. I hope you enjoy it as well. Thanks, Dave. This work was featured in the C.O.R.E. group, August 2009. / This work was featured in Surrealism, October 2008. (593 Views at 21 Nov 09) Kangaroo paw is a common name for a number of species, in two genera of the family Haemodoraceae, that are endemic to the south-west of Western Australia. These perennial plants are noted for their unique bird attracting flowers. The tubular flowers are coated with dense hairs and open at the apex with six claw-like structures: from this paw formation the common name “Kangaroo Paw” is derived.
