In this admittedly strange little design I kind of wanted to convey that humans are indeed a part of nature, not separate from it, but entwined in nature, as a Strangler Fig wraps itself around its host. / Brought down to the same level we are no different from any other organism, and who better to star in that than Charles Darwin, my Buddha of natural science!
The word dharma literally translates from Sanskrit as that ‘which upholds or supports’, and is generally translated into English as ‘law’. / Darwin’s theory of Evolution through Natural Selection is not “just a theory” but an accurate insight into the nature of biology – and beyond. / Nothing is static. All systems that reproduce or replicate have to evolve or else risk extinction. This is Law. / Anyway, this is a silly design of mine in homage to Charles Darwin.

Painted in oil, with some digital enhancement, 2008. A fossil Encrinurus trilobite, tastily bedecked for the holidays! Makes a great Holiday card for the geeky paleo-loving set. Like me. Cards arrive with a blank interior. My suggestion for an interior message: / “Tra-la-la-la-lobite!“ Also will be included in my upcoming “Collection 2” Calendar for 2010. Happy Holidays!
Eremophila longifolia, Long-leaved Emu-bush or Berrigan, Boort, Victoria, Oct09. Although not officially listed with a conservation status, this pretty shrub is slowly disappearing from North-Central Victoria. The hardest to propagate of all the Emu bushes, with about a 10 percent strike rate in local nurseries, the small populations that do still exist are virtually all on road sides and hardly anywhere in secure conservation blocks. My theory on its decline is that it is due to the complete lack of Emu’s in this part of Australia. I reckon these birds would have been the natural seed distributor and that they really need the Emu’s guts to germinate properly.

this is a suspected hybrid of the nationally threatened Diuris protena (Northern Golden Moth Orchid) and an unknown Leopard Orchid. It turned up during the annual survey of the Diuris protena population at Wedderburn, hiding amongst a population at a location recently cleared of rabbits. Problem is, the Leopard orchids were nowhere to be seen. Either the hybridisation happened a long time ago and the Leopards have since disappeared, or they are still hiding somewhere avoiding detection. It is therefore unknown which species of Leopard is guilty. Another further-flung possibility is that this a new and as yet undescribed species.

Our spiny stick insect Scorpey is one of our pets. She’s a species from the rainforests of northern Queensland. Her prickles sting on the skin of your hands when she’s climbing all over you. Wedderburn, Victoria, oct09

This group is meant for visual art, written works and t-shirt designs that celebrate, explain, teach or attempt to popularize evolution and natural selection or that generally have evolution and natural selection as their main theme.
Feel free to add work of which you think it has evolution as a main theme or is evolution inspired or feel free to upload works that explain us a little about evolution.
Also feel free to visit the forums and leave your mark. I will try to regularly post links and news bits that are of interests to you all and you are welcome to do the same.
Due to the nature of the work here, a lot of the images could well be considered Avant-Garde so check out that group too!!
