Say NO to Palm Oil by Sarah Mokrzycki

Deforestation for palm oil costs the lives of 1000s of orangutans every year. Palm oil
is typically labelled “vegetable oil” on food packaging, thus, as consumers, we cannot
know if we are contributing to the future extinction of these incredible animals.

On Death Row: Moreton Bay Figs Face the Axe by Erland Howden

In July 2004 the City of Sydney and the NSW State Government cut down many of the
old Moreton Bay Figs that made the Domain and Botanic Gardens beautiful places to
be. The justification at the time was that there was a danger of branches falling on
people’s heads, though it was later revealed that the tree removal eased the process
of hiring out the venues for major events.

The Practice of bile farming is unnessary… beautiful bears are poached from the

S.O.S – Save Our Strzeleckis by Tony Middleton

A mountain ‘road’ winds through the rain and mist as I return to my favourite forest –
This majestic cool temperate rainforest stands unprotected whilst the buzz of ‘action’
and ‘destruction echoes through the deep lush valleys overpowering the wizardry
of the Superb Lyrebird…It’s enough to make you cry….Located and defining
South Gippsland is the Strzelecki Ranges – once one vast rainforest which was a
unique blend of cool temperate with amazingly isolated pockets of warm temperate
rainforest

Newport contradictions #2 by Col Finnie

There was a massive shit fight when the natural gas fueled Newport power station
was being proposed, and ultimately built. It’s a few kilometres from the Melbourne,
Victoria CBD. Its job was to cope with heavy electricity loads, particularly in winter.
Loads that couldn’t be handled by the dirty, CO2 factories that are the coal-fired
power stations in the Latrobe Valley, much further away from Melbourne.

Sealers Cove by Travis Easton

Sealers Cove was first visited by George Bass in 1798 and in keeping with the
culture of the time he named it in accord with what commercial exploitation could
be gained from it. Within a year a business associate of Bass’s had commenced
sealing with activity peaking a few years later when up to 200 boats a year plied
their trade in what was by then known as Bass Strait.

Froth Rocks by AdamDonnelly

“According to Dr Ipek Kurtboke BSc., Ph.D, Senior Lecturer in Environmental
Microbiology at the University of the Sunshine Coast, this froth in the surf, which has been
widespread over the Sunshine Coast in recent months, is caused by microbial activity which
occur naturally in the sand in harmless numbers but when conditions are right i.e
temperature, currents, pollution in the water such as run off after heavy rain including oil
deposits from the roads, these microbes will multiply greatly feeding off the pollution.

in memory of Sam by Clare McClelland

a little tribute to our national animal hero of 2009…
Sam the wild koala, who set our hearts on fire when he came out ot the burning
forests and begged a drink from a fire-fighter, whose image also epitomised hope
and community, while large parts of the state of Victoria and the properties of many
residents were being burnt to the ground on Black Saturday,
sadly passed on to happier hunting grounds today,
no doubt to be re-united with many of his kind.
Sam, your courageous spirit will remain with us forever..

Proud to see my image featured (third from the top, the hacked tree) – thanks. It was an awful day – lots of people out there mourning the trees as they were slashed down under police guard.
