with this friendly, but giant False Killer Whale, Pseudorca crassidens. A magic moment in shallow water. / Subic Bay, Luzon, Philippines, South China Sea
This young calf of around 4 or 5 weeks of age kept us entertained for about an hour. It was one of the rare ones that more often than not got it’s whole body out of the water. Tail and all.
A humpback whale breached VERY close to our tiny whale watching vessel in Frederick Sound near Petersburg, Alaska, USA. Breaching humpbacks make a thunderous sound when they crash onto the surface of water, much like a ‘thwack.’ This fella was so close the crash was more akin to a boom! A few more feet and the whale would have been in my lap. This is a different view of a breaching humpback whale than what one usually sees, affording a good look at the humpback’s throat pleats (rorquals), barnacle encrustation on the whale’s throat and the whale’s bumpy tubercules on its rostrum (nose). Canon 40D, Canon 100-400mm lens, shutter 1/640, f/9.0, focal length 330mm, ISO 400. August 15, 2009

The first morning we / were blessed with watching the sun rise over the ocean / as a Humpback whale breached in the distance. I had entered this painting for an exhibition but it was sold / beforehand. Featured in DOLPHINS & WHALES GROUP – September 2009 / Featured in “INSIDE SOLO” Vol 11 (September 25th 2009)

A day in Carrickfergus ….. NI ….. (paradise)!
Our whale watching is now over for another year. This was the last breach I could capture. Can’t wait for 2010 and the arrival of our magnificent Humpback whales back into Hervey Bay.

A humpback whale in Monterey Bay, California. This was hardy whalewatching – we were some of the few people left on deck by this time. The weather conditions, as you can see, were not good for spectacular photography but I thought the tall ship sailing off into the fog suggested a story and warranted a slightly vintage look. / Canon EOS 400D and SIGMA 70-300mm lens.
