  • A Mother's Work by ECGardner

And you think your job is rough? These are two beautiful northwest Bornean orangutans. Bornean orangutans are classified as endangered, although they are in better shape than their cousin the Sumatran orangutan. Overall, the population of orangutans in Indonesia in the 20th century declined by an estimated 90%. Their major threats are habitat destruction, the bushmeat trade, and the kidnapping (ape-napping?) of young orangutans for the pet trade (which generally entails killing the mother). Interestingly, there is an orangutan sanctuary in Borneo called the Sepilok Rehabilitation Center where orphaned and injured orangutans are cared for and released if appropriate. Sepilok is doing great things working toward orangutan conservation, but it also is doing great things for the human population of Borneo… As Borneo’s biggest tourist attraction, Sepilok has enhanced the Bornean economy, created new businesses, and created new jobs. Sepilok is a great example of how we can help save endangered species, preserve wilderness areas, and help ease poverty and human suffering all at the same time. It doesn’t have to be humans or other animals—with proper planning and thought, all can benefit. In conjunction with the Primates Group’s fundraising efforts, 100% of the profits from the sale of this image will be donated to Gorilla Haven.

  • The earth is bleeding by Alina Holgate

Taken from inside the cave at Port Campbell.

  • Destruction by Abdel Soudan

The government destroys a city laying above ancient graves in Luxor Egypt. “A 50-year-old battle to evict squatters from one of Egypt`s most renowned archaeological sites, the West Bank of Luxor, was finally settled when authorities began demolitions. / The fate of Qurna`s 10,000 residents was sealed when authorities gave the demolition order for the mud-brick houses erected over ancient Egyptian tombs on the Theban hills that had become a tourist attraction in their own right.” / http://www.angolapress-angop.ao/noticia-e.asp?ID=492135 The people of Qurna are not happy with the move since where they lived was a tourist attraction and that is how many families made their living… about 95% of the people i talked to were not happy with the move… I’ll be posting more pictures of the inside of their old homes (the destruction if their houses started in 12-2006).

  • Girls' world 10 by maka1967

A girl gave an old man who searched garbage bin for food her cookies. But the old man didn’t know how to open it, so she then came back to open it for him (I also photographed that, if you want to see it, please let me know.). Not many girls would do that. She behaved very naturally. She gave me some hope for the new generation.

  • After Earthquake by maka1967

After the earthquake about 1500km away in Sichuan province, the life in Beijing is about the same. There were people waiting in line for more than two hours in front of the blood bus before a mall to donate blood. But there were also people who walked on street not far from them, talking quite excitingly about what a “magnificent” sight the strong earthquake could be. People are so different! The red cross services run out of forms to be filled to donate blood. So people in the photo had to make an appointment.

  • Princess Chrysanthe — If you want to pick me...ask by cdwork

Our world should be a balance of all things! Human kind has sadly assumed control and rides ‘rough shod’ over everything, even his own kind. What right have we?? We must show respect for things that differ. One day there will be a debt to pay!!!! / /
