This image has no tonal gradation – how was it manipulated? Is this a portion of an image that has been Photo Shopped? There is something odd about it that I cannot fathom and I don’t know what it is. It’s almost like it has been put through a HDR process before being cut and paste onto the background. You have shot the rule of thirds out of the water with this one in that the eyes are on the lower third but because of the face on the hood – it works (this time)! Cheers! |

Hi Chris, I did a lot of curves adjustment, dodging and burning, shadows and highlights and selective sharpening on this image. I erased the background and then added a layer of illustration for background to give the ‘teddy bear’s picnic’ theme. What is tonal gradation? I haven’t heard that term before |

Tonal Gradation the smooooth blending of tone from highlight to shadow is the best way that I can describe it. The more information that is recorded in your image the smoother the change. The image that you have just posted (original?) has tonal gradation, the one where you played with the curves doesn’t, and in my opinion, the worse for it as it doesn’t look natural or complimentry to the sitter. However, you’re the artist and that’s your perogative. |
