Asian Elephant at Taronga Zoo, outside Sydney Australia. The Asian or Asiantic Elephant (Elephas maximus), sometimes known by the name of one of its subspecies, the Indian Elephant, is one of the three living species of elephant, and the only living species of the genus Elephas. It is the largest living land animal in Asia. The species is found primarily in Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Indochina and parts of Nepal and Indonesia (primarily Borneo), Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, Bhutan, and Samatra. It is considered endangered, with between 41,410 and 52,345 left in the wild.[2] This animal is widely domesticated, and has been used in forestry in South and Southeast Asia for centuries and also in ceremonial purposes. Historical sources indicate that they were sometimes used during the harvest season primarily for milling. Wild elephants attract tourist money to the areas where they can most readily be seen, but damage crops, and may enter villages to raid gardens. – info provided by wikipedia.

This shot of a steam pressure gauge was taken in the engine room of the sternwheeler (paddle steamer) S.S. Klondike, which is now a static tourist attraction in Whitehorse, capital of Canada’s Yukon. I actually had two cameras with me, with both my lenses, but chose to use the longer of the two lenses for this shot, because depth of field was so important to the way I visualised the image. The light wasn’t great. It was murky and raining, and this shot was taken in the mid-section of the interior of the historic vessel. That’s precisely why I shot it from side-on, rather than standing directly in front of it and obscuring what little light there was. The Klondike played a crucial part in transportation and re-supply during the gold rush and was a symbol of the subsequent prosperity in the province. I can only imagine how many crew members in the course of the vessel’s operational life must have trained their eyes on this gauge, to make sure their wood-burning ship was operating within the correct parameters. I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my images in any way. Shot with a Pentax K200D, using a Sigma 70-300mm lens. F4.5, 1/90 sec, ISO 400, focal length 170mm. This is 3 year old John Morgan and his little pig Black Betty. / / The original photo was taken at a pet parade in Clarkson Ky by my friend Mary Kay Franklin this Fall. The photo was so busy with way to much background, such as peoples legs and other pets that you could barely see the this special moment between these two best friends. I have since taught Mary Kay how to use the lens to do as much cropping as possible. The photo didn’t have enough resolution in it to be acceptable after my close crop so with the help (salvation actually) of Photoshop CS4 and a lot of time I ended up with this and was very pleased. I used Orton and a lot of dodging and burning to get to this point. / I was out at John Morgan and Black Betty’s home today and got some new photos, which I have yet to download and start to work on. It is quite funny to watch this little pot-bellied pig, three dogs and John morgan play with each other.

As the old saying goes, a picture may be worth a thousand words, but sometimes adding just a few more words is what brings the picture to life! If cartoon bubbles were in your picture, what would they say? Or what title would make the image come alive? Add your image to this group and let the creative and talented RedBubblers make suggestions. For our challenges, we will suggest a caption and ask you to add a picture to go with it.
When you comment and suggest captions, please put them in bold (by adding an asterisk at the beginning and end of your caption) so they jump out when people are looking through the comments.
Thank you! Have a great time!
