Bokeh? good or bad?

Susannah Kotyk Susannah Kotyk 16 posts

I had no idea this word or affect even existed in the photography world I have seen it before in photos but had no idea it had a name and could be good or bad thats how much of a rookie I am. What I need to know is if the bokeh in my photo is the good or bad version and how one goes about knowing the difference thanks in advance for helping me out with this baffling technique.

This is such a big subject, but the image looks good to me, i would suggest you look at the following web site to give you an understanding of how complex a subject this could be. http://www.rickdenney.com/bokeh_test.htm
also the following web site. http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/bokeh.htm.

Sue, bokeh translates to “blur.” I think your blur fits with the subject. In fact, it is of the best kind, since it enhances your subject matter.

Bokeh is not really bad or good, it just is.

My autumn leaves here has a lot of bokeh
My daisy among dasies here has different bokeh.

I like the backgroud you have with the critter. Most importantly, you would like it enough to post it. Nice capture.

Now after seeing your photos William I am really confused I thought it was just the little circles that people were calling bokeh but in your images I dont see any so its the the blur or the background image blurred or out of focus then? as for my image I had never even noticed it had the colored circles blurred out until I joined RB and started hearing of this bokeh and then I noticed it in one of mine hoping that I hadnt messed mine up thanks for your comments

thanks Motti for the link its starting to make a little more sense to me now so its not just the lights its anything in the background blurred so this image has it too.

Well I have to admit I have no idea! I looked up “Bokeh” too and thought it just meant blurry, but I really like your interpretation of the small circles. Even if that isn’t right it sounds more like something worthy of a name to me haha. Either way, I think both of the photos above are truly exceptional!
