The Meramec River cut gently through its beautiful and mostly unexplored bluffs, as the small boat carrying a few men, an Osage Indian guide, and French explorer Philipp renault emerged from the fog. The year was 1720 and Philipp Renault was lured to this are by Osage Indian legends. The Osage told Renault of a gigantic hole in the earth they would use for refuge when they were caught in extreme weather. The ‘natives’ also claimed along the walls of the cave were ‘veins of glittering yellow metal’, which captured the Frenchman’s attention. Read more of this fascinating history.... Here I currently have limited internet time for abit.. I Thank you in advance for any comments etc. made. I will reply asap.. ~:) Nikon D60-55/200 / Meramec Caverns, Stanton Missouri,

Galapagos, Ecuador A couple of Creagrus furcatus, a species of Galapagos’s seagull. BEST VIEW LARGE (click on the image) Thanks for your attention. The Swallow-tailed Gull (Creagrus furcatus) is an equatorial seabird in the gull family Laridae. It is the only species in the genus Creagrus, which derives from the Latin Creagra and the Greek kreourgos which means butcher, also from kreas, meat; according to Jobling it would mean “hook for meat” referring to the hooked bill of this species. It was first described by French naturalist and surgeon Adolphe-Simon Neboux in 1846. Its scientific name is originally derived from the Greek word for gull, “Glaros” and via Latin Larus, “gull” and furca “two-tined fork”. It spends most of its life flying and hunting over the open ocean. The main breeding location is on the rocky shores and cliffs of Hood, Tower and Wolf Island, with lower numbers on most of the other islands. It is more common on the eastern islands where the water is warmer. / It is the only fully nocturnal gull and seabird in the world, preying on squid and small fish which rise to the surface at night to feed on plankton. The Swallow-tailed Gull is a near-endemic breeding bird of the Galápagos Islands, although a few pairs nest on Malpelo Island off the coast of Colombia. When not breeding, it is totally pelagic, flying and hunting over the open oceans, and migrating eastward to the coasts of Ecuador and Peru.
This is one of the last flowers in my small garden, it is still budding and growing and looks great among all the dead dried up leaves and such. Taken with a Kodak EasyShare C813 camera. Photo is straight from the camera, except for cropping.
