Taken at Lake Glenmaggie during the Gippsland bushfires in Dec 2006. Typical of Australian summers, the combination of extremely hot, dry days (40 degrees celcius and higher), combined with quite possibly the most severe and longest drought in our history produces ideal weather for bushfire activity. Australia has come to accept that bushfires are a natural occurrence here and that we all have to accept and deal with them.

This is the trunk of Roma’s largest bottle tree. It has a mighty girth of 8.9 metres . . . and makes me look like a pixie! / Nicknamed “Barry” the tree was transplanted in 1927 by Roma Town Council from a local property to its present location in a town park. The tree was said to have been fairly well grown at the time of the transplant so the estimate is it originated in the 19th century. / In fact Roma is famous for it’s bottle tree-lined streets. In Station Street, also know as Hero Avenue, a bottle tree was planted for each one of the local men who died in the first world war. There are over 100 trees. Locals swear that each of the memorial bottle trees have taken on unique and human like proportions and individual personalities. The trees are treated with great respect as living reminders of the men who died.

As most of you know by now, we live in the quiet (at present) and delightful Indian ocean side township of Yanchep, some 55 kms north of Perth in Western Australia. The beaches are less than 5 minutes away in the car and I took this photo yesterday afternoon, (Friday 20 Nov) / The nearest red roof building you can see is a beachside cafe/kiosk (their fish and chips are great by the way!) / On the left – and out of shot – a large housing development is taking place and the eventual plans show that we can expect to see promenades, cafes, small hotels etc. It wont be our sleepy little Yanchep for much longer. / Camera Sony DSC R1. / 24-120 Carl Zeiss Vario Zonnar lens with cp filter / f11 at 1/250th second / hand held
