Line diagram = response to contours an abstraction of the site. Possibilities / Building slithers, scale of program, circulation –connection across water / Terraced a language to treat the site – intensity –dynamic and static. Bridging the two sites with program, breaking up the scale and intensity –clear circulation creates narrative –movement and pause –outdoors provide moments of relief.
impression of the landscape rolling away to the edge of the lake where they abruptly stoped. The distinction between land and water is added to by the line of trees. This screen or barrier is something that blocks access to the experience of the edge and the views beyond to the lake. I wanted to illustrate how the treatment of this edge was important in creating a permeability and a linkage to the island. The connection to and from the island will need to form an integral part of the experience. Whether this includes exhibition space or not, boat, bridge, boardwalk or tunnel. The experience of being on the island in a morning fog allowed us to experience a scene of enclosure surrounded by trees. Once the fog lifted the place open up and you began to see how exposed the island is to the rest of the lake and the views to and from the island. On the mainland the viewing platform or ridge forms a clear vantage point for departure. The entry sequence could arrive and descend towards the edge of the lake. I want the landscape rooms or open air exhibitions to be as integral as the internal space of the building. The built form and building function be come a framework for participation and activation of the landscape and waterscape. The liminal or interstitial space be explored in such a way as to be an experience in itself.
