Crystals of sand look like rough diamonds under high magnification. Light was shown at an angle to capture the glass-like texture and shadows of the sand resting atop smooth glass. This photo was taken with a Canon PowerShot G9 and two add-on 10x macro lenses.

November 20th. It’s a cold and rainy day in Cornwall today and I was wondering how to brighten it up a little. I was wandering round “Winner’s” (GREAT store!) this morning and spotted a couple of glass butterflies in a clearance area, so I bought them with the idea of somehow using them in a cheerful composition. I taped up a piece of black velvet to the kitchen cupboard doors, poked a flat stick through it for the butterfly to sit on, got a couple of LED flashlights to light things up, then shot the butterflies from various angles. Finally, I took one of a big glass flower I have. I put the flower one up, then transferred the butterfly images on to it. I resized and re-aligned them and this is the result. I hope it brightens up your day a little! Thanks for looking, Mike.

I love grand reflections in huge buildings, but sometimes even the smallest reflection tells you a lot about the neighborhood. This was in Barrio Viejo in Tucson, AZ. Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18
