Identity Series. Defining the merge of African and English cultural identity.
The African lady (MamaAfrica) with a zebra pattern on her clothing is representational of the people of Africa. She is the balance between nature and man. The elephant and seed pod with foliage are the symbols of nature which live in harmony. Below the trees on the top left, are the roots which anchor the elements firmly in the African soil. The arid landscape depicts the decay of nature, emphasizing the need to preserve what we have or it will be destroyed, hence the dead tree and Buffalo skull. A little inconspicuous (on screen) dungbeetle in the bottom right of the painting is rolling it’s dung ball into it’s nest…! Watercolour on 300gsm Waterford paper. W/N watercolour paints.

I had so much enjoyment painting these kids. / A friend of mine went to Africa to help build houses for the orphans who live with house mums. He took this photo of these gorgeous kids, who were rather curious with him ` / ~~ / This boy who is gazing at the camera with such beautiful eyes caught my heart strings and I wanted to paint this photo as soon as I saw it. / ~~ / Painted with soft pastels on Colourfix Artspectrum paper.
Oil on a slate wall/floor tile. January 2009. Long story but my friends kitchen walls are titled with slate tiles. He has some spare and gave me a few. From the moment that I picked up this tile I just knew that there was a hidden landscape on it. I used the natural cracks and bumps for this piece did not prime the tile, just started slapping paint on. Not quite sure if this is a success, you be the judge.. / Highly experimental of course.
