The art deco period must have taken its cue from Victorian England because decoration was over the top. This fountain is in the lobby of the recently redone and opened Fox Theatre and the fountain is as it was in 1930. I think I’d get dizzy trying to drink from it. Opening night, April 11, 1930, proved to be the biggest party the small community of Tucson had ever seen. With Congress Street closed and waxed for dancing, four live bands, a live radio broadcast and free trolley rides Downtown, the party was one not to be missed. Those lucky enough to have bought tickets in advance—3,000 or so people—enjoyed the show inside as well as out. The Theatre was closed in 1974 and fell into disrepair. It has now been restored and is again in use. Featured in Architectural Details 10/05/09 / Featured in Visual Artists of Green Valley 10/04/09

Craftsmanship is something seldom seen in modern construction. Take a walk around a new estate and generally all you experience are the restrictions of an estate overlay, dictating fences, footpaths and facades. Perhaps it’s just a reflection of modern times that there simply isn’t the time (and money) to apply decorative and functional items with craftsmanship capable of withstanding the passage of time. St. Paul’s cathedral, Melbourne.
This was taken at the Almudena Cathedral in Madrid, Spain. The cathedral now stands in what was originally occupied by Madrid’s first mosque, then by a church dedicated to one of Madrid’s patron saints, Santa María de la Almudena. I took a few shots inside the cathedral but the ceiling really caught my attention. / (AS IS) Fujifilm F31fd / This is a staircase inside one of the towers of the Temple of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, one of Gaudi creations. To me this particular part of the staircase became a nightmare, as it is very dark on a good day, but when I was there, it was getting dark outside, I was one of the last tourists coming down from the tower that day and I was alone. As you can see, there is no balustrade/hand rail, and it’s a long way down (and this is taken upwards, when I was half way)! I used my camera’s AF light to see where I was stepping, and the only thing that kept me from screaming was taking pictures. Enjoy! / Currently in the ‘Land of Dream’ challenge. /
The Grote Kerk or St.-Bavokerk is the largest church in the Dutch city of Haarlem. It is dedicated to Saint Bavo. / It is built in the Gothic style of architecture and started its life as a Catholic church. It has been a cathedral from 1559 until it was confiscated in 1578 and converted to Protestantism. Around 1900 a new Catholic cathedral known as the Cathedral of Saint Bavo was built in Haarlem. Until 1831 graves were made in the church. A local story is that there is a grave of a child who used to hit his mother. After a time his hand started growing above his grave, and a copper plate had to be installed on the grave to stop the hand from growing. Arches those are silently crumbling, yet graceful. It is the incomplete mausoleum of Ali Adil Shah (1656 to 1686) who ruled Bijapur (in present Karnataka). Today it is in ruins. Ali Adil Shah of the Adil Shahi dynasty wanted to build a mausoleum of unmatched quality of architecture. As per the plan twelve arches had to be placed vertically as well as horizontally surrounding the tomb of Ali Adil Shah. However due to unknown reason the work on the structure was left incomplete and only two arches were raised vertically. The remains of the twelve arches placed horizontally can be seen.
