You sure are getting a handle on the elliptics Belinda. Go YOU!

Very nice and all tied up in a bow Belinda!

Thanks Jaclyn, abstractjoys, and James!

Here’s another I did, rendered at a smaller size to try and save some time. Didn’t quite work out that way since I ended up spending a couple of hours, and using several methods/manips post-render to make it fit for a greeting card without the white border. LOL Finally I found the simplist and most effective way – “Liquify” is a VERY handy tool to play with in PSE. ;) It loses the symmetry on the edges because of that, but I kind of like how it becomes less rigid.

Wonderful work Belinda!

Jaclyn Hughes Jaclyn Hughes 5252 posts

Belinda I know the card sizes kinda through off symmetry some but that is why scale is a lovely thing. Cards are 2327×1535 or vice versa. Trust me, my other account is nothing but cards. :D Fabulous work hun!

Thanks James.

Thank you, Jaclyn. I will try your values next time! I have a table of sizes that work for cards that Owlspook made up; at the time I was just trying to get an acceptable render time. I’m not used to leaving my computer on all night to render an image but it’s done a fair lot of it recently. LOL Some of the cards look ok with a white border but this wasn’t one of them and one of the card groups I’m in doesn’t allow borders.

Belinda, what quality are you rendering at, because I have rendered at 500, 1000 ,2000 and 4000 and I can’t see a difference except the render times. I render all of mine at 1,000.

barrowda barrowda 1491 posts

@ Belinda: Peggi (Wolfepaw) has a great discussion on dA of rendering times and the effect of zoom on them. You can set the zoom as low as -3, then increase the scale value to return the image size to where you want it, and then your render is a lot faster than zoom = 0 or higher. The apparent quality will change somewhat, but you can increase the render quality to 10,000 or more and still have a fairly fast render (~1 hour, with dimensions of 2400 × 1800 and oversample = 2; these are settings I like, but depends on what you want for your final). The other advantage to zoom = -3 is that you can see the results of your tweaks in the main window MUCH sooner. Hope this helps your enjoyment of Apo a bit, but let me know if you have any questions when checking this out.

Cheers everybody!!! David :o)))

Thanks for all the advice. I have read through Peggi’s, too and that has improved my render times. I generally render about 2000 on the quality, but I might try 1000 for the next one – thanks James. I have not played with negative zoom versus scale except that I never put the zoom above 0 as it is a nightmare! I will see what going negative does on my next one – cheers David.

My issue is I want to render on the biggest pixel dimensions I can so I set the image size to something close to what it says I have memory for, giving me the option of bigger images at the end. I up the DPI to 300 post-render in PSE – is there any other way to get a higher DPI result straight out of Apo, or does it matter? I want good quality printable results as my hubby is very keen on them becoming a part of my art portfolio and the wee shop we run from a room in our house.

Any further thoughts on this are most welcome.

Ok here is what I have done…. which gives crisp, beautiful results. My density I play with around 1000 or so. If you have alot of detail going on in your picture, the density will not pick it up at a very low density as it looks like “fuzz” instead of detail. I have gone higher for density for stuff like blooms and I do not post process any of my fractals (unless I am adding text to a card) My filter radius stays at 0.4 and oversample is 2. Those 2 never change. Now, some people like David might use negative zoom numbers, I think of zoom like it’s the friggin plague and I don’t want anything to do with it. Been there, forever renders…. negative, positive, don’t want it. Use your scale. Don’t be afraid to let your pc render while you sleep… ask most fractalists and that is what they do… I’m a special breed and render 4 at a time. :D Set your render to start, shut off your monitor and go sleepytime lol I have seen some folks render at like 7000×5000 to have the largest piece to pretty much print anything…. I don’t do that big.

Now, when I render my images I render them at 3840×2560 for all the larger formats, canvas, framed, and all that jazz. BUT, if I am making a card out of it, I render the card at 2327×1535 or 1535×2327. This keeps you from having those ugly borders going around it. Yes, you will have to upload 2 of the same picture if you do 2 different sizes, but RB doesn’t really have it set up so that your cards don’t have that white border due to their sizing.

Here is the best tip I can offer right now….. you are new at this and everyone in the group can tell you what they do. YOU have to find what looks great and works great for you. My way, Davids way & James way may not work for you & your pc limitations. You have to remember a very large key point with Apo, your render times also have to do with plugins you use. Some plugins (variations) take an eternity no matter what you do. I can’t even begin to list them because I don’t use them! lol And sometimes it matters as to how many plugins you use, and the combinations of them as well. You really don’t want to use like 10 at a time… I’m sure you don’t but I have seen it happen. And it breaks down to this, are you willing to risk your quality of the image to cut down your render times or are you willing to wait up to 24 hours for 1 render? lol

Hey kiddies, how many of you have had a render for 12-48 hours? lmao Yes, Belinda, it happens… if you want it bad enough. I hope this helps you out, sorry it’s long winded but that’s just me. :D If you have any more questions I will be happy to help any way I can. Just give me a lil time to get back to ya…. extremely busy!

Much love to all my kiddies, I miss you all and love seeing the new work. You all are doing fractabulously!!! I added a new member today as well, her name is Stormey so give her lots of love kids! Off to figure out what I have to do next! Muahz!

Thanx James, you are doing fabulous hun! :D

That’s awesome advice, Jaclyn, and you’ve all given me heaps to think about and play around with. I am not so afraid to leave the computer rendering overnight, most of mine have been done that way, anything from 2 hours to 15 hours so far. It’s the memory that restricts what size I go up to. So I will keep playing and mixing up all your suggestions until I find the balance that works for my setup and needs. All part of this great learning curve I’ve found myself on (and enjoying it all very much!) Have I told y’all what a FANTASTIC group of people you are.

Which is a wonderful time to inject a greeting … Welcome to ATF Stormey. Hope you find it as cool being here as I do!

I know that in the Apo 3d hack there is a setting for low memory, which is why they say use that with XP..

Well here is my attempt at this. Tried 5 times, lol. Not too pleased with it. Oh, just noticed your welcome Belinda as I was typing this. Thank you very much and I’m sure I will. Have wanted to learn more about this program for a long time. You guy’s have some beautiful fractals.
Anyway, the color’s don’t seem to match on both sides of the design. Does anyone have a clue what I might have done wrong?
Have a good day everyone.

I see nothing wrong with your piece Stormey…. I think it looks fractabulous for a first try hun. And those elliptic splits can be a lil bugger. Colors looks great from here. :D

James Brotherton James Brotherton 1449 posts

Looks fantastic from here too Stormey. You should have seen my first one. It wasn’t even close to this. I think the problem most people have is the cylinder part is not pronounced. Keep hacking at it like Carolyn did. She finally hit the jackpot last month with a perfect splits elliptic.
