FEATURED NOV 2009 PLAYFUL PHOTOGENIC ANIMALS / FEATURED NOV 2009 PAWS N CLAWS / FEATURED NOV 2009 ANIMALS IN ACTION / FEATURED NOV 2009 PHODOGRAPHY / / Nikon D70s;Sigma50-500mm lens;f/6.3;1/250sec;500mm focal length; handheld; minor contrast adjustment only. Met these wonderful dogs and their owner down at our foreshore a couple of weeks back. I had always admired the Italian breed Bracco Italiano, but had never come across the Maltese variant before. Their loyalty to their loving master, and their exuberance in the shallow ebb tide was nicely challenging to capture in the last few moments before sunset. This was my first shoot out with my new lens. I have highlighted two images from the Bracco meeting, this one shot at 500mm, and “His Masters’ Voice”http://www.redbubble.com/people/rodeorose/art/4095674-2-his-masters-voice/ at 50mm showing the range of the powerful lens.

The peregrine falcon is the fastest of all animals, and it wouldn’t do to have her just sitting there. When the falcon hunts, it flies high overhead, looking for prey. Then it folds in its wings and dives, headfirst, and knocks out its unsuspecting dinner. This high-speed dive is, unfortunately, the reason for the most common injury to wild falcons – they cannot see power lines and crash right into them, resulting in severe wing injuries and sometimes electrocution. A portion of sales will go to The Wildlife Center of New Mexico for wildlife rehabilitation. Drawn in charcoal on Strathmore smooth bristol paper, 2009.

Back at the fox hole this morning. Cloudy skies made for some nice saturated color without the fear of burning out white fur and other highlights. Fortunately the foxes were active and interacting well with each other. This is a female fox (vixen) that’s new to me. She has a significant car across the left side of her muzzle and a big white patch on the right side of her muzzle (you can’t obviously see it in this image). The scar is most likely from an encounter with one of the coyotes that lives in this area. Judging how big the scar is, it must have been a heck of a fight and she was lucky to have escaped. I was off to the side of a trail as she came trotting down towards me. She’s looking right at me in a few frames, but something caught her attention and she’s checking it out while she still trots down the trail. Baby owls will evade their predators in many ways, and the most inventive is by making themselves look HUGE, all the while clacking their beaks threateningly! Beagle puppy ready to run … he seems to be smiling!
This beautiful Weimeraner came flying along a hiking/biking trail well ahead of his owner. What an athelete! Shot at the National Whitewater Training Center in Charlotte, NC.
This is an up close shot that I captured of the seabird. It was blowing a little that day and it almost hit me in the head with it’s wing.
This Bald Eagle was descending when I captured it recently on the commercial fishing vessel that I work aboard in the Bering Sea, Alaska. I just thought this shot was pretty neat. Hope you all enjoy it as well.

I have see this little dog at my local dog beach a few times and this is all he does. He occasionally looks up for air with his dirty little face and then its straight back into it! Cracks me up :)
