Whitby is one of my favourite places in the world. As children both my wife and I were taken here for day trips, so unsurprisingly it’s somewhere that keeps drawing us both back. We managed to buy a house here some years ago which means our ties are now stronger than ever. Whitby is a working town; it still has a small fishing fleet and some boat building yards which provides some grit to go with it’s pretty pantiled alleyways and kiss-me-quick hats. The towns maritime history is fabulous; Captain Cook sailed out of Whitby, William Scoresby invented the crows nest here, and the Whale jaw bones on the west side of town are testament to it’s whaling history. There’s something here for all ages, tastes, and pockets – which probably explains the throngs of tourists in peak season. But go on a crisp winters day – like today in this picture – buy some fish and chips, and simply stroll past the boats toward the pier, and take in the history and scenery with a breath or two of fantastic Yorkshire fresh air. You can’t better it – I promise. Equipment: Nikon D200, Nikkor 17-55mm f2.8G. / Technique: 34mm, 1/320sec, f8, ISO 100. Slight Orton effect added to boost color and contrast.

Located near White Pass Summit, British Columbia, Canada on the Klondike Highway. The Tormented Valley contains large areas having an almost “lunar” appearance, making this one of the most unique eco-systems in North America. Here you will explore a forest-tundra ecotone consisting of the blending of a stunted forest of three hundred year old trees, known as “krummholz”, and alpine tundra. / As I took photos in this area, I stared at the appearance of the tiny trees and rock surface like it was from outer space. Orton Effect technique is named after a Vancouver Island’s photographer Michael Orton. He took one very sharp photo, deliberately blurred another identical one, overexposed both of them and merged them together to get this dreamy, impressionistic image. He used traditional film but we can do the same thing in
photoshop.
Limit of 3 images per 24 hour period will be accepted
If you created your artwork using this technique we would love to have it in this group.
