FEATURED ARTIST FOR MAY 2010 Moshe Cohen

restlessd restlessd 4427 posts

Here is featured artist as Selected by Anna Shaw at Altered by Design for the month of May.

I am so excited that the talented Moshe Cohen has agreed to be our Featured Artist here on Altered By Design

He has such talent with his photography, digital art and writing. Moshe lives in Israel, and his photographs give a unique insight into his country and his people. More recently Moshe has moved into digital art. His skills are evident when you look at his work. Each image is alive with ideas and vitality. His compositions are always strong, often surreal and always immaculately crafted.

Here Moshe talks about himself and his work;

I am 50 years old. I am married to Orna , she is a painter and some of her paintings are showed on RedBubble.

About 20 years ago I took a few photography courses. I couldn’t continue with photography because I had no time (work etc.), I actually didn’t have anything to say. About 2 years ago I took 2 courses in photography again. I enjoyed it so much and searched for a place I can show my work and sell, that’s how I found RedBubble.

I started to use Photoshop to do simple things like selective color and selective focus, eventually I started to create digital art. It enables me to protray my ideas in a visual way, and being able to do this is what excites me the most.

A fine example is Demons From The Past

Demons from the past
by Moshe Cohen

Before I start a new work, I have a title, and then I think how to show it visually. Actually the writing is new for me, and although I love it, it is the art that brings it to a new higher level. I consider the writing an integral part of the art work.

On the visual side you are one of the main influences the second is Patrick Desmet. On the mental side, I read a lot of philosophical and mystical writings mostly in the internet. The theme that runs through my work are The way – as a means to progress. My work almost always deals with spiritual issues.

I found it impossible to choose just one work that I most liked. I have three particular favourites… "Demons from the past’ which you can see above, and these two…

I love the images that Moshe has chosen as his favourites. Each one so rich in symbolism. I also love the striking colours and the purity of the compositions.

These are just some of my favourites…

Thank you so much Sue.
My next work, comming soon will be called “About Time”.
Meanwhile here is the writing that will follow the art work:

“The time is a good teacher, but he kills his students” Louis Hector Berlioz, French composer

We all have a sense of time but can’t explain when asked, what is time?
Our modern conception of time is based on Einstein’s theory of relativity, in which rates of time run differently depending on relative motion, and space and time are merged into spacetime, where we live on a world line rather than a timeline. Thus time is part of a coordinate, in this view. Physicists believe the entire Universe and therefore time itself began about 13.7 billion years ago in the big bang. Whether it will ever come to an end is an open question.

Some theories, most notably special and general relativity, suggest that suitable geometries of spacetime, or certain types of motion in space, may allow time travel into the past and future. Concepts that aid such understanding include the closed timelike curve.
Modern physics has alot of open questions, conflicting theories and paradoxes
concerning time.

“There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven–
A time to give birth, and a time to die; A time to plant, and a time to uproot what is planted.
A time to kill, and a time to heal; A time to tear down, and a time to build up.
A time to weep, and a time to laugh; A time to mourn, and a time to dance.
A time to throw stones, and a time to gather stones; A time to embrace, and a time to shun embracing.
A time to search, and a time to give up as lost; A time to keep, and a time to throw away.
A time to tear apart, and a time to sew together; A time to be silent, and a time to speak.
A time to love, and a time to hate; A time for war, and a time for peace.” – Ecclesiastes 3:1–8

In general, the Judaeo-Christian concept, based on the Bible, is that time is linear, with a beginning, the act of creation by God. The Christian view assumes also an end, the eschaton, expected to happen when Jesus returns to earth in the Second Coming to judge the living and the dead. This will be the consummation of the world and time. St Augustine’s City of God was the first developed application of this concept to world history. The Christian view is that God is uncreated and eternal so that He and the supernatural world are outside time and exist in eternity.

Ancient cultures such as Incan, Mayan, Hopi, and other Native American Tribes, plus the Babylonian, Ancient Greek, Hindu, Buddhist, Jainist, and others have a concept of a wheel of time, that regards time as cyclical and quantic consisting of repeating ages that happen to every being of the Universe between birth and extinction.

What do you think?

This one has an almost abstract feel to it. You sense a hustle and bustle of movement with the blur gives a sense of trying to slow us down so we can stop & look

I love the story that goes along with this lovely kitty. That you love her shows your heart. And the cat eyes have a feeling in them that shows she loves you as well. Any man who loves his cat is a wonderful man :o )

Somtimes she seats on the computer monitor (I have an old big one, not the LCD type) while I am working, looking and trying to cath the mouse arrow on the screen..

This is fabulous Moshe. What you do so well is to depict the time lines in our lives. Here, from the innocence of childhood, to the first kisses of young adulthood. I love it.
