FEATURED IN THE “FLORIDA SUNSHINE STATE” GROUP / FEATURED IN THE “ALL AROUND FLORIDA GROUP” / I moved to FL from NY this past spring and it’s one of the best things I’ve ever done. / I was pruning some plants and this beautiful heart shaped leaf from an ornamental cabbage needed to be photographed. I tried many things but it was the contrast of the color, shape and softness of the leaf against the shades of brown metal and hard lines of the sewer cover that I liked best. / Kodak Z712, Natural Light / Southside – Jacksonville, FL 12/2009 / /

/ I shot this image in a historic town here in the panhandle of Fl. In this town there is everything from old fishing villages, to historic plantation homes. This was an actual house inhabited by the slaves that worked for the plantation and family of the day. I decided to go back to the town a few months ago. It happens to be one of my favorite shooting spots….There was an adjacent slave house next to this one…It has since been torn down…What a waste of incredible history. The plantation home sets about 200 yards back from the river. The story about this home is remarkable. Back in the day….the masters of the plantation used underground tunnels to import and export slaves to this plantation. The slaves had to crawl approximately 200 yards through these tunnels to reach their destination of either the house, or the ship waiting for them on the river. Legend has it that while a shipment of new slaves were making their way to the main house, one of the tunnels collapsed intombing the slaves forever.

This candid shot was taken during the traditional candlelight service at the Faith United Methodist Church in Fort Myers Beach Florida on Christmas Eve. The pastor reminded us that the Christmas spirit only lasts for a while, but Christ’s love lasts forever. The congregation sang “Silent Night” while every candle in the church was lit and the lights were turned off. Only the candles, representing the light of Christ, could be seen then. This tradition is common in many Christian churches on Christmas Eve. / This was taken with a Sony Cybershot with no flash. / FEATURED in “All Around Florida” January 2010

The Eurasian Collared Dove, Streptopelia decaocto, also spelled Eurasian Collared-Dove or called simply the Collared Dove,is one of the great colonizers of the avian world. Its original range was warmer temperate regions from southeastern Europe to Japan. However, in the twentieth century it expanded across the rest of Europe, reaching as far west as Great Britain by 1953; breeding in Britain for the first time in 1956, and Ireland soon after. It also now breeds north of the Arctic Circle in Scandinavia. It is not migratory. It was introduced into the Bahamas in the 1970s and spread to Florida by 1982. Its stronghold in North America is still the Gulf Coast, but it is now found as far south as Veracruz, as far west as California, and as far north as British Columbia, the Great Lakes, and Central Saskatchewan. Its impact on native species is as yet unknown; it appears to occupy an ecological niche between that of the Mourning Dove and Rock Pigeon. / It breeds wherever there are trees for nesting, laying two white eggs in a stick nest. The eggs are incubated by the female during the night and by the male during the day. Incubation lasts 14-18 days, and young fledge after 15-19 days. It is not wary and is often found around human habitation. This is a medium sized dove, color in the range of buff grey with a darker back and a blue-grey underwing patch. It is substantially larger than the common Mourning Dove, and larger specimens may exceed six ounces in weight, and exceed fourteen inches in length from tip of beak to tip of tail, with a wingspan that occasionally exceeds 18 inches. The tail feathers are tipped white. It has a black half-collar on its nape from which it gets its name. The Adult is a Medium-sized bird with a sandy gray body and head with black half-collar on back of neck and a medium-long square tail. / The Juvenile is similar to an adult, but has reddish edges to the body feathers, brown eyes, and brownish red legs. This is a gregarious species, and sizable winter flocks will form where there are food supplies such as grain which is its main food as well as seeds, shoots and insects. It may become an agricultural pest where it eats and fouls grain. The song is a coocoo, coo repeated many times. It is phonetically similar to the Greek, decaocto (‘eighteen’), to which the bird owes its name. Occasionally it also makes a harsh loud mechanical-sounding call lasting about 2 seconds, particularly when landing in the summer. The males have an unusual mating display, consisting of a rapid nearly vertical climb to height, followed by a long glide downward in a spiral. At all other times, flight is typically direct without gliding. / The Nest is constructed in trees and is made of twigs, stems, roots, and grasses. / They will lay 2 white, slightly glossy eggs when hatched they will be helpless with some down. I spotted this small bird so far from my vantage point in the car that I thought it was perched in mid-air. I couldn’t even see the wire with just my eye (with my glasses on!) I took the shot with my 55-250 mm lens, but the bird was so far away I didn’t get a great shot. I put the two images together as a collage to give it some sense of size. Shot in Dunnellon, Florida. More wonderful birds at Busch Gardens in Tampa FL, I have to say they do a wonderful job making natural surronding for their wildlife. Really worth a trip over there with your family.
Today a fellow Redbubbler Cindy and I braved the cold and went out to Ding Darling Wildlife Preserve, on Sanibel Island, Fl. to see if we could find any wildlife. We did see a few birds and this was one of them that was close enough to photograph. Image taken with my Nikon Coolpix P80 camera with my 18x lens extended fully.

Water. The water is runoff from a nearby swamp. It has been colored by tannin from the trees surrounding the swamp, giving it a rich amber color that fades or deepens with the depth of the water. The sun brings out yellows, orange, and red…the colors of flames. The water had formed a small river that led to the Gulf of Mexico. Captured at Grayton Beach, FL. Camera: Kodak Z980.
