But when St. Giulio, that had the power to command over the waves, the storms, the wild animals and the human beings, arrived near the lake , waving his hand he chased away the dangerous menacing animal. / He reached the Island journeying over the water on his cloack guided by his staff. The big reptile disappeared and St. Giulio, tired and near to his death, thought that the island was the right place to build his hundredth and last church dedicated to the Holy Apostles. The Island of San Giulio is today a place of! great misticism. Here was born on 962 William of Volpiano, during the siege to Queen Willa by Emperor Otto, King Berengario II’s wife, who had taken the Island from the Bishop of Novara. The big central building was a Castle. The island was the governor ’s seat that represented the bishop. On 1842 it was destroyed to build on it a seminary. Now there is a Benedictin monastery that helps giving more mistic power to a place that is by nature immersed in the silence. / Between 1593 and 1615, a decisive role in the continuation of the project was played by the Bishop of Novara, Carlo Bescapè; he was concerned that the complex should be a strictly organised centre of devotion, in line with the ideas which had inspired the Council of Trento, and more particulary with the interpretation of the Counter-Reformation given by Carlo Borromeo in the diocese of Milan. / The Basilica of San Giulio was originally founded by St. Giulio in 390. During the siege of Otto 1st (956 – 962) the church was seriously damaged and only the central apse was saved. After year 962 the canons had the privilege on the territory of the Island signed by Otto the Great , so they dedicated themselves to the reconstruction of the church. The tower was added during the 11th – 12th century. / In the Basilica the frescoes were certainly begun very early, and re-done at various times. Of the datables the oldest frescoe is aged 1421. But the greatest work of art in the Basilica is the ambo. The pulpit is carved out of grey-green serpentine from the Oira quarry. The sculptures represent the Evangelists. The figure sculpted among the eagle and the lion is probably Guglielmo of Volpiano. / The elegant houses on the lake were the canon’s residences: In 1763 each of them was called after a Saint to recognise them easily Il lago d’Orta, lake of Orta

Cycling through the forests near Lage Vuursche the other day I made a very sad discovery. This time it was not the bench that was missing. Some of you may remember my bench saga which I submitted last year. This time something worse has happened to this scene, something that cannot be restored like a bench that was destroyed! The wonderful larches that were standing along the right side of this beautiful path, are gone! Why they were cut down, I do not know. The only thing I know is that never in my lifetime again their colourful branches will fill my heart with joy, as they did each time and especially so in spring or autumn. When I found this old shot in my archive which I took in November 2007 and have not shown to you before, I realized so well what has gone. It may sound a bit sentimental what I am writing here, but I just had to tell you about it and show you this scene of beauty which has gone by now. I add the pictures submitted earlier for those of you who do not know them yet. This was shot a few days before Christmas 2008. We had just walked out of a car park on Flinders Street and I shot three or four frames very quickly. It was almost 9pm and because that’s the height of summer here in Melbourne, I was hoping for a striking sunset, but there was nothing except a brief, miniature flare of yellow in the almost clear sky. That’s when I realised that a tight frame from street level would still give me some great silhouettes incorporating the stars hung above the tramlines, the foliage from a nearby plane tree, and of course the main dome and the distant tower above Flinders Street Station. I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my images in any way. Shot with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigma 18-125mm lens. F8, 1/350 sec, ISO 200, focal length 125mm. Can you solve this visual mystery? You can have as many guesses as you want …. In less than half an hour, Shelly Hiebert in Canada has nailed part of the answer, saying it is a Christmas tree. A few minutes later, Sazfab in the UK has solved another part of the puzzle, correctly using the word “carousel” .... so we’re almost at the end solution! Who can come up with the answer of what this unique Christmas tree is? And a few minutes later Sazfab has solved it in its entirety, working out the fact that it is a miniature musical Christmas tree carousel. Big round of applause for Shelly and Sazfab. By the way, this is Sazfab’s THIRD correct solution in my weekend mystery pictorial puzzle series! The little Christmas tree is only about eight inches high and in order to get an unusual view, I shot it from directly above. It was shot indoors, in normal light, with my default 18-125mm lens, not a macro lens. As you can see, I’ve utilised depth of field to add to the intrigue, with only the yellow star in sharp focus. I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my images in any way. Shot with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigma 18-125mm lens. F5.6, 1/10 sec, ISO 800, focal length 125mm. 100-2878
