“Trapped” is part of a series of four Dragonfly images, one for each season, that are painted in a different style…the other three will be posted later on….”Toward the Light”, seen below, is not part of this set.. / The paper is heavily gessoed and while wet I incise shapes, and remove sections of the plaster, until I am happy with the results…after drying, I paint the details, add more gesso, more incising is done, until I feel the work is complete… / The Dragonflies are trapped metaphorically and physically in the frigid cold of winter, along with the leaves of the forest, but there is also the impression of a wire fence, holding them fast till spring releases them... dedicated to all who feel trapped…trapped by love, by guilt, by penury, by wealth, by pain and suffering…..release will soon be here Watercolour on Gessoed Paper / Toward The Light
“Nothing in the world’s going to pull me back / And nothing’s gong to keep me in / Going to run like the wind. / And if you should tell me you want to hold me down, / Before the glow of morning I’ll be gone without a sound. / The more you try to keep me in / The less you will succeed. / Sailing free, / Sailing free. / MIKE BATT Sunrise on Hudson Bay Mountain in British Columbia, when the snow flushed pink for a few short moments as the rising sun shone on it, and the Full Moon was setting. Taken from Ted Widen’s photograph “Moon-set, Sun-rise”. I used 9” x 12” Daler Rowney Ingres paper and Schmincke, Sennelier and Unison pastels.
The quote below is from the blog of an artist called John Unger who is actually being sued by a manufacturer who stole his work and is making knock offs that he sells around the country..I’ve been following the story which is really appalling…I know that many of us are not in a position to help him, but you may know someone who can afford his art which is being sold at great discounts to help him fight his case..the artist sold his work on line much like we do…put yourself in his place…what would you do? Please tweet this post, or add a link to this page in your journal or face book and myspace etc….. “I believe his goal is to use strong-arm litigation tactics to force me to keep spending money or risk losing my copyrights — not by true adjudication, but by default if he is able to outspend me”. for the whole story click HERE Please also read the comments….they are very eye opening, especially the one about the woman who bought art and then had them mass produced and resold
Pastel on Canson Paper – Brown – 80cm x 60cm Placed third in the Contrapposto Challenge and Featured in the Life Session Expressions group – March 2009
Pastel on grey Colourfix sanded paper. 70cm x 50cm The sun goes down and it’s time for bed for my colourful little group of chooks! They all have their specific locations, and there is much feather fluffing and fidgeting until everyone is happy that they are in the correct pecking order and all is right with the world! This is a fairly old painting (circa 2003), so some of them are now running around in that big chook pen in the sky! There is a whole new generation who are equally beautiful. The very handsome fellow in the middle of all the girls was called ‘Pavarotti’ (he had a wonderful voice)! Finished in the Top Ten of the ‘Mental Alchemy’ challenge in the First Things group – May 2009
Pastel on Sanded paper (Burgundy Colourfix) 35cm x 50cm A commissioned portrait which I thoroughly enjoyed. Finished in the Top 10 of the Red/Green Complementary Colours challenge in the Painted Ladies group – June 2009 / Featured in the Fine Art of Portraiture group – July 2009 / Featured in the First Things group – July 2009
Pastel on Colourfix paper (burgundy) – 70cm x 50cm We are having a few scattered showers here at the moment, which reminded me I had this painting hidden somewhere in my archives! A study of eucalyptus leaves which I painted in 2005 as part of a solo exhibition (My Easel and Eye) which was held at a local winery. The opening was a BLAST! One of the most memorable days of my life! Featured in the Art Up Close group – Sept 2009 / Featured in Contemporary Pastel Painters – Oct 2009
“A thing of beauty is a joy forever: / It’s loveliness increases; it will never / Pass into nothingness…. / An endless fountain of immortal drink, / Pouring unto us from heaven’s brink.” / JOHN KEATS This painting of Jacarandas lining the road along the wine farms in South Africa has been so named because of the call to rid the country of these beautiful trees. They remain part of the South African scenery and are deeply embedded in the peoples’ psyche. I used A4 sized Canson paper, with Schmincke, Sennelier and Unison pastels.
“Listen! you hear the grating roar / Of pebbles which the waves suck back, and fling / At their return, up the high strand, / Begin, and cease, and then again begin, / With tremulous cadence slow, and bring / The eternal note of sadness in.” / MATTHEW ARNOLD Takoradi is a coastal town in Ghana, where beauty, poverty and malaria live side by side. When it is Monsoon Season, the rain falls down without respite, the entire world becomes waterlogged and “clouds” build in the great trees and move upwards. I used 300mm x 400mm Canson Mi Teintes pastel paper and Schmincke, Sennelier and Unsion pastels.
