OK. After reading Al’s introduction, I’ve come to notice that he brings up a good point. He feels that this group should only display work taken in/based on Canada. So, this is where you all come in. At the moment, there are only 41 of us in this group, which means we can’t have a tie. So, what I’d like to know is that do you think:

1) All art in this group should be taken specifically in Canada, or be based on Canada if th work submitted isn’t photography?

or

2) Any art taken by a Canadian, by default, can be calssified as ‘Canadian Art,’ and thus this way of thinking should be adopted as the criteria for the work that can be displayed in this group?

If you guys could pick and post either a 1 or 2 and then maybe explain briefly why you chose that number, it would help me out greatly. Remember, this is our group, not my group. Take care, and post your reply soon.

only art / photos in Canada and by a Canadian ..is this is not what this site is about ?!

I think I would go with 2.
As my art is mostly comprised of abstracts and do not exactly pertain to Canada, but being a Canadian, I believe any art that I display is “Canadian Art”.
I joined this group because I’m proud to be Canadian. If art only taken in Canada or pretaining to Canada is accepted, I have no choice but to withdraw from the group. I love working in abstracts and will not change my style because it is not considered “based on Canada”.

I mean no offense by my statements, it is my personal opinion, and I will abid by any decision made by this group.

Thank you,
Rhonda

I can only speak for myself, but I only plan on submitting photos/art that were either taken in Canada or is representative of the Canadian lifestyle ie maple leaf, hockey, etc…. I have no objections to other types of images if submitted by a Canadian, although they may be better off in another group for that particular type of art/photo

In my personal opinion, I prefer to go with the ‘Canadian’ art submited by Canadian artists, not with the “Canadian” theme.
In my understanding a Canadian presence in Redbubble meant our group of Canadian “all media, styles, etc” artists!
So I vote for # 2

I think we need to decided if this is a group about Canada or a group for Canadians.

I personally vote for #2. We should be promoting Canadian artists regardless of subject matter. This our chance to spotless ourselves to the rest of the world. Not all of us create “Canadiana” art but we are all Canadians.

Just my thoughts…

I would say #2 as I think we as Canadians should have a place to display our work whether it be Canadian themed or not so long as it is done by a Canadian Citizen.

I for one am not Canadian and if this club is exclusively for my northern neighbors let me know and I will remove my photographs.

I joined this group because I love Canada and have vacationed there many times. In my travels to Alberta, B.C and the Yukon I have made many friends over the years and even have a Canadian “sticker” on my vehicle…that’s how devoted I am to your Country.

I agree with Al that the work here should be representative of Canada and literally based on the Country itself. This club’s title should be changed to “Canadian” if only Canadians are welcome to join.

I was under the impression that the groups were not set up to divide us but to bring us together. Then again, some members here are most likely from Quebec and that may explain the desire for separatism….

Hey all,
I mean no offense to anyone or their art.
I just felt a group titled “Canada” should represent Canadian-themed art.
It wouldn’t seem right if I put up a photograph of the Sydney Opera House in this particular group, even if I took it. There’s other groups for that photograph.
I’m only a photographer, so I can’t comment on the other forms of art as to what might be appropriate to “Canada”.
Friends outside our borders should certainly feel free to submit photos taken in Canada or other art representing Canadiana, maple leaf, the beaver, hockey, whatever.
We do have a national distinctness and a huge beautiful country with tons of talented people. Canada rocks.
My opinion.
Al

the impresion that i got when i joined this group was that it was for images of canada…if you want to go and restrict it to just canadian citizens ..so be it…i think redbubble groups should be open to everydody that enjoys art..if you wish for me to withdraw my art sadly i will

If the group were titled “Canadian Artists” that would say to me only artists that are Canadian could display their work.

The groups is called Canada, so to me that says any art that is based on Canada, whether it be a drawing of a Canadian person or place, or photograph or a writing about. I didn’t think it was about being all Canadian artists with whatever images they produce.

(I am a Canadian but I had planned to only submit items that would be displaying things/places/people who were Canadian)

to me it should be art/photos of Canadian based for people that live here (take out the Canadian citizen)... or vacation here… im an aussie but for the mean time i live in canada… im not posting my stuff in Queensland group just cause i i was born there or my heart belongs there…
i post here cause i take photos in Canada!!

i think that it should be pics taken in/of canada, by anyone, as well as art by canadian artists. however, a picture of the las vegas sign by a canadian artist would be pushing it. in the case of artwork vs photography, i think canadian artists could miss out if their art is not something necessarily representative of our country (which rocks! by the way!).

I’m of two minds here,my art is mostly scifi, but I do take pics of things Canadian. When I first joined I thought this would be a group for Canadian artists.
Now I understand its just for snaps of Canada.Which saddens me.
I’m OK with that.I’ll only put snaps of Canada here.

What we need is someway for every member of RedBubble to put the country they want to represent in brackets ( ) after our name.
That way you just have to follow the groups guidelines.

[I also think a group for Canadian Artists would be good,I’d do one but have no time, although if someone is willing to do one with me,send me a bubble.

I think this group should post art about or taken in Canada only, regardless of where they live. It’s Canada we are promoting. Just a thought. Some fine artists that are not Canadian can serve the site well with their Canadian content.

Since our group’s name is “Canada” not Canadian, I would vote for the first option… Anything about or in Canada should be considered no matter who takes it.

wish99 wish99 6 posts

hmm.. well.. in my opinion, i think art taken by a canadian, representing canada in any way, shape or form. Since this is a canadian group… it would only make sense to have canadian art, taken by canadians themselves.. but thats my opinion.

Alright. I’ve been reading over what everyoe’s ben saying, and first things first, I want to clear up some misconceptions I see being noticed.

First off, the two options were never inteneded to single out or exclude those who aren’t Canadians by citrizenship, and yes, phillip, I am well aware that the group’s guidelines don’t state anything to the contrary; the purpose of this thread was to discuss how and/or if to change the guidelines, so why would they be changed already?

The reason the second option had included the entire “Art taken by a Canadian” thing was because as I understand it, one can mean two things when someone says “Canadian art,” and whereas the first option highlighted one of those possibilities, where the work pertains to Canada is some way, this is how I understood the second way, and maybe I’m the only one that saw it this way as well. The second way the phrase “Canadian art” can be taken is that as Canadians, any art we produce is be default Canadian because its creator was Canadian, regardless of its content. That last boldened aspect is what I was trying to separate and emphasiaze in the post, and not the seperation of different nationalities or places of residence. What I guess I wanted to know and should ahve put more simplistically was “Should all of the art in here contain Canadian content?” There is a reason, though, that I included the second option, and it was for the benefit of people like Rhonda and AlienVisitor whos art is either abstract or basically not photography- the obvously dominant form on RB- but they are still Canadians, and so as I see, it, their work is still Canadian in that sense. I don’t want things to go so far that this group only contains stereotypically Canadian content, mostly because Canada isnt a stereotype. Canada is for a large part beautiful, natural wilderness, but it is also cities and towns, and natural disaters, the homeless, and the sad and forgotten. I want this group to move people, and let them get a real hold of what Canada is, not just that post card version, which means we need to show ALL of Canada. The only way that can happen is if Canadian based art and artists are showcased alike. I’ll agree that a shot of the main drag in Las Vegas wont really pertain to what we want here, but I’d like to ask for people to be open minded with abstract art and such. If need be, an if everyone here thinks we’d be better off this way, I’m completely ready to request the creation of a group called “Canadian Artists,” although I expect I’d see more or less the same crowd from here minus a few people there. Once again, please, let me know what you think. The sooner we can get these thigns established before they group becomes too large for major changes, the better.

Wow – tough call. But I had already assumed it was Canadian Content only but I understand the other responses too – “showcasing Canadian Talent” – no matter what the subject matter is. I guess majority will rule….. tough call!

AlienVisitor AlienVisitor 115 posts

It is a tough one,but really its not about citizenship, its about Canada,I think we need another group to promote Canadian Artists.
This is a good group and I will continue to be a member and post images that reflect Canada, but for the most part my photography is a means to an end.
That end is digital art,and I would like to be known as a Canadian artist who does scifi art.
At the best of times my art is a hard sell,so anything in the way of promotion is a plus.

David.
