I too am interested in what sort of work you’re thinking about. I’ve been meaning to start thinking along the exhibition lines for a while now, but have no idea where to start. |

hmm well. i think a very interesting idea would be to get a few people together. perhaps mixed mediums. come up with a general theme, and go and shoot/paint e.c.t according to that theme, then come back and see what happens…good challenge. anyone keen? |

sounds fantastic-but how to move that from a challenge to an exhibit would be the difficult part. i did work experience through uni in a gallery but they ‘selected’ art, so have no idea either about how to get into a gallery except for canvassing. would be fun to try though-and even better to succeed! |

one idea for a theme- water-brisbane is a river city after all, but level 5 water restrictions! water is the basis for life… |

hmmm. i think the exhibition would have to be completely funded by us. i mean we could send some emails and make some calls to try and get as much sponsorship as we could, but ultimately i think we would be the main source. and as for the water topic, i like it, but i think it might be too over-done. like i think a theme based more on, an emotion, or feeling would be better then an object or thing like water. many more possibilities for originality as well i think. but this is great. we are slowly getting some-where. would u be interested in joining silveraya? |

youre prob right about the water thing being over done, thinking the same thing today actually, would have to be something that people would hear and be intrigued by instantly….. |

I am displaying some work in an exhibit called Raw Convergence (http://www.rawconvergence.com/) in a month and a halfs time. It has been organised soley through the members of another photography forum. When this is over (and I get back from holidays in March) Id be happy to get involved =) I think its around the $400 mark to hire this gallery for the week “http://www.artfactorygallery.org.au/” cheers |

Hey ben |

Hi, The exhibition was a great success. We probably attracted a total of 130 odd people on the opening night and it was a great experience for all involved. Id be very interested in doing it again! I think one aspect that really helped was a designated timeline and regular meetings (we had about 5 or 6 beforehand). Clear organisation and working to timelines (choosing pictures, getting prints ready > who does advertising ect ect.) Ben |

Thanks Ben for letting me know. I’m glad it was a success for your group. |

I think most of us had our prints done at DigiLab, Brisbane. We all varied, a majority of the work was framed and behind glass. One of our exhibitors, Trent Wallis, is a Sydney Sider who had all of his works done through redbubble and shipped them up to us. They turned out quite well! |

Exhibiting is one of the fundamental aspects of being a creative I reckon, its like being a cook, and cooking for others, or being a musician, and playing to an audience. Without constant exhibition we end up cooking, or making music, (metaphorically) only for ourselves. Personally I beleive the current mainstream system of occassional exhibitions maybe 2-3 per year is an artificial imposition on the reality of our constantly creative minds. as a practising artist, I try and paint daily, surely at least 10-20 hours weekly, and constant production neccessitates constant exhibition, but how? and where? and how to pay? and how to manage? ehxibitions tend to be unwieldly, administratively demanding, and oftentimes unprofitable ventures. Even the administrative determination and focus to bring a disparate group of artists together for a meeting about maybe putting together a show in the future can take weeks to organise, lol. Anyway, I think weekly exhibitions are best, I know it flys in the face of ‘conventional wisdom’ but in a society dominated by fresh, ever available, and constantly changing new media and content, the concept of regular exhibitions, showcasing regular artwork from local artists open every week surely has a place.. Also from a marketing point of view promoting a regular series of events is far more economical and efficacious than promoting stand-alone events that quickly come and go. Thoughts? |

HMMM- weekly exhibitions – interesting idea. so, would you come into where your work is being exhibited and change over the pictures to the latest one you have created? MichelleL |

The idea we have atm is that its really a rolling exhibition. The fact is we hang wall to wall and floor to ceiling (generally speaking) although participating artists are free to hang their work as they like, so artists are able to work on producing new art constantly and then they simply update their wall before each Friday exhibition. With 20 artists, each participant really only needs to put up 2-3 new pieces and you have 40-60 new works per week (as an average) so u can see that even though its not a new show every week, it has the potential to have far more new work than a traditional show which might not even show that much work altogether.. The Gallery actually not only makes Exhibition space available to the artists, it also offers storage space and studio space as well, the idea being that the venue offers maximum facilitation to participants, whilst maximising the available venue resource. Now you have me thinking. I sold my first painting from a local cafe. They displayed local artists work for free no commission. You could pop in whenever and change your work. Perhaps there is a local cafe in your area who would be interested in doing this. Maybe there is a quiet night during the week that more business would be appreciated, so a combined rolling exhibition as Hoopersart would be the go! The cafe would have a coffee and cake special maybe each Tuesday night or an entry fee for the night which would include coffe and cake, they get customers and the artists get exposure. All the artists involved could distribute flyers locally which can be fairly cheap to produce. |

That’s not a bad idea Kathie – I know a couple of cafe owners…..might have a chat to them…... |
