Topic: EXHIBITIONS / Joint exhibition?... Now you have me thinking. I sold my first painting from a local cafe. They displayed local artists work for free no commission. You could pop in whenever and change your work. Perhaps there is a local cafe in your area who would be interested in doing this. Maybe there is a quiet night during the week that more business would be appreciated, so a combined rolling exhibition as Hoopersart would be the go! The cafe would have a coffee and cake special maybe each Tuesday night or an entry fee for the night which would include coffe and cake, they get customers and the artists get exposure. All the artists involved could distribute flyers locally which can be fairly cheap to produce. |

Topic: EXHIBITIONS / Joint exhibition?... The idea we have atm is that its really a rolling exhibition. The fact is we hang wall to wall and floor to ceiling (generally speaking) although participating artists are free to hang their work as they like, so artists are able to work on producing new art constantly and then they simply update their wall before each Friday exhibition. With 20 artists, each participant really only needs to put up 2-3 new pieces and you have 40-60 new works per week (as an average) so u can see that even though its not a new show every week, it has the potential to have far more new work than a traditional show which might not even show that much work altogether.. The Gallery actually not only makes Exhibition space available to the artists, it also offers storage space and studio space as well, the idea being that the venue offers maximum facilitation to participants, whilst maximising the available venue resource. Topic: EXHIBITIONS / CBD GALLERY & BLAC hey Michelle :) cooolios, Ill put ur name on the door.. ;-) hey Derek, yeh its funny I reckon I see a similar pattern in many of the artists I deal with, that is they enthusiastically produce a series of works, but flounder when it comes to exhibiting/displaying/sselling them, at which point the work piles up, and ironically snufs out the very motivation and enthusiasm that begat it. I always think theres three aspects to being an artist. that is Stylistic development, studio and medium skills, techiniques etc, and finally selling and display, and I beleive that we need to be conersant with all three aspects to be able to grow and develop as artists :) Dave |

Topic: EXHIBITIONS / CBD GALLERY & BLAC Hey Derek :) Um time frame, we do require artists to participate for a minimum of 3 months, we usde to take artists on for shorter periods of time, much to our detriment. We exhibit every week, so artists can look towards joining anytime, best to come to a show first and see how u like the energy there :) Really, rather than a regular series of different shows we run a continuously developing exhibuition, with fresh art, new artists, and new decor and facilities every week, so it is both continuous in its availability to the public and also in its freshness and novelty.. We show all kinds of media, paintings, sketches, sculpture, photography, mixed media, found object, computer art, really its up to participating artists to ‘hang what they like how they like ’. Thanks :) Dave |

Topic: EXHIBITIONS / CBD GALLERY & BLAC Hey Michelle :) The Gallery is at Lvl 3, 99 Elizabeth St, which is above the Elizabeth St arcade, directly opposite the Myer Centre in the CBD. The $20 minimum reflects the fact that we are happy for artists to share feature spaces but there is a minimum per artist.. Ther reason for this is that we dont want artists paying like $7.50 or $5 per space because it becomes so cheap that artists become lacksidasical towards the shows and fail to participate, so the $20 minimum is designed to ensure that artists see the space as at least a minimum investment and put their effort into it. The standard feature spaces are 3.75M high buy 1.5-2M wide, but at the moment we pretty much let existing artists hang more of their work on the empty walls since no point in seeing it go to waste, also a perk of participation.. Yes thats what no sales facilitation means. As a gallery collective we are operational to support independant artists by offering them regular exhibitions, we are not a commercial gallery and though we send out regular weekly emails to our database, we do not sell or handle transactions automatically for artists. As a new development we have developed a new standard for participating artists: Participating artists may: (in order of preference) Attend and handle their own sales, or To be honest, we are all artists, and as an artist, I dont want to be running around handling other artists sales for them, however faced with dissapointing buyers on the night and artists in their abscence, ive developed these four options. The gallery opens at 7pm every Friday night, and closes at 10pm. Most of these details and more are featured on our myspace and other online resources detailed in our initial post, also theres some nice photos of the gallery etc there if youd like to take a look :) All the best :) Dave |

Topic: EXHIBITIONS / CBD GALLERY & BLAC Hey Dave where exactly is the gallery? can one have a trail time of one month instead of being locked into 3 month committment? I notice you mention it’s a minimum of $20 a week to participate – does the price rise if one has a lot of work? ie more space used? You’ve mentioned no gallery sales facilitation – does this mean that any artist who hangs work there must be there to look after their own sales? What are the opening and closing times of the gallery? I think that is it for now MichelleL |

Topic: EXHIBITIONS / Joint exhibition?... Exhibiting is one of the fundamental aspects of being a creative I reckon, its like being a cook, and cooking for others, or being a musician, and playing to an audience. Without constant exhibition we end up cooking, or making music, (metaphorically) only for ourselves. Personally I beleive the current mainstream system of occassional exhibitions maybe 2-3 per year is an artificial imposition on the reality of our constantly creative minds. as a practising artist, I try and paint daily, surely at least 10-20 hours weekly, and constant production neccessitates constant exhibition, but how? and where? and how to pay? and how to manage? ehxibitions tend to be unwieldly, administratively demanding, and oftentimes unprofitable ventures. Even the administrative determination and focus to bring a disparate group of artists together for a meeting about maybe putting together a show in the future can take weeks to organise, lol. Anyway, I think weekly exhibitions are best, I know it flys in the face of ‘conventional wisdom’ but in a society dominated by fresh, ever available, and constantly changing new media and content, the concept of regular exhibitions, showcasing regular artwork from local artists open every week surely has a place.. Also from a marketing point of view promoting a regular series of events is far more economical and efficacious than promoting stand-alone events that quickly come and go. Thoughts? |

Topic: EXHIBITIONS / Joint exhibition?... I think most of us had our prints done at DigiLab, Brisbane. We all varied, a majority of the work was framed and behind glass. One of our exhibitors, Trent Wallis, is a Sydney Sider who had all of his works done through redbubble and shipped them up to us. They turned out quite well! |

Topic: EXHIBITIONS / CBD GALLERY & BLAC Call for Artists: CBD Gallery and BLAC (Brisbane Local Arts Collective) are pleased to announce that we are now embarking on an expansion programme at the Gallery. Over the past few years we have been operating a highly experimental Gallery initiative in Brisbanes CBD, with the express purpose of developing a viable, sustainable, and independant, alternative market for local, original artwork and culture. Since our inception we have trialled many kinds of events, exhibitions, systems, and activities through our venue. Due to the speculative nature of these activities, our programs have often yeilded mixed results, partial success and partial failure, across a range of criteria including financial, social, human resource, ethical, artistic, audience development, marketing, sales, event management, power sharing, committee management, curating, decorations, entertainment, media, the list goes on. At the height of our success we were feilding 60-70 artists per event, and drawing audience numbers up to 400 per show. However the sustainability of this system, among other aspects, tended to be weak, leading to the downsizing of our then current program, in preperation for a reworking of the organisational structure, regular schedule, and venue presentation towards a more organic and sustainable system. After a years effort, we beleive we have now developed the crucial sustainable quality we were lacking in our previous programmes, and are subsequently now looking to restock the Gallery with local artists, and move once again towards our goal of developing a thriving independant market for local cultural product. : Artist Participation: Basically speaking these are the new guidlines for artist participation. Cost for a feature space is $30/week Exhibitions are held weekly A 3 month commitment, paid monthly in advance. No commission on sales. Hang more or less what u like, how u like so long as it is well presented. Art storage available at $50 per week. No Gallery Sales facilitation. Artists can share walls but all artists must pay a minimum of $20/week to participate. All participating artists need to take turns to curate opening nights including catering, entertainment and decorations/themes, marketing/promotions etc. (although the gallery will maintain its own regular emailouts, media liaisons, etc.) This is the gist of our new system, artists are welcome to sign up starting any Friday of their choice, Offer available first in best dressed, any questions, please ask, and please feel free to forward this on to anyone u think might be interested :) www.myspace/cbdgallery |

Topic: EXHIBITIONS / Joint exhibition?... Hi, The exhibition was a great success. We probably attracted a total of 130 odd people on the opening night and it was a great experience for all involved. Id be very interested in doing it again! I think one aspect that really helped was a designated timeline and regular meetings (we had about 5 or 6 beforehand). Clear organisation and working to timelines (choosing pictures, getting prints ready > who does advertising ect ect.) Ben |

Topic: EXHIBITIONS / Joint exhibition?... hmmm. i think the exhibition would have to be completely funded by us. i mean we could send some emails and make some calls to try and get as much sponsorship as we could, but ultimately i think we would be the main source. and as for the water topic, i like it, but i think it might be too over-done. like i think a theme based more on, an emotion, or feeling would be better then an object or thing like water. many more possibilities for originality as well i think. but this is great. we are slowly getting some-where. would u be interested in joining silveraya? |

Topic: EXHIBITIONS / Joint exhibition?... sounds fantastic-but how to move that from a challenge to an exhibit would be the difficult part. i did work experience through uni in a gallery but they ‘selected’ art, so have no idea either about how to get into a gallery except for canvassing. would be fun to try though-and even better to succeed! |
