Local villagers rebuild this bamboo and rattan bridge over the Sedon river every year, after the monsoonal rains have retreated. This remarkable engineering feat will handle pedestrian and 100cc motorcycle traffic… if you’re game to try. For the average Lao person, the bridge can be negotiated without too many problems… but heavier-foreign motorcyclists must ride slow enough to keep on the narrow-slippery bamboo path, but fast enough to avoid falling through the matting altogether. Be sure to stop and pay your dues at the toll-booth on the rocky island mid-river… Lao police may not be equipped with high-speed pursuit vehicles, but they do carry AK47’s.

Ha’Penny Bridge, a pedestrian bridge built in Dublin, Ireland, in 1816, spans the River Liffey and was the first iron bridge in Ireland. It got its name from its distinct shape as well as the original toll of one half-penny, (later, one penny, two farthings). The toll was dropped in 1919.
