elliewinds’ interview:

Another of Ellie’s works:
it ain’t me, babe

Name: Ellie
Age: 35
Where are you from originally, and where do you live now? I grew up in Michigan and I now live in Portland, Oregon (I spent 12 years in the middle living in Chicago, Illinois).
Single? Married? Kids? I’m single and I have 3 daughters
How would you describe your style of work or what you are interested in? What inspires you? How do you get started creating? I think my style has two halves to it. i love clean, simple images captured in a way that makes something simple, compelling. I also love light and shadows and rich textures. I love night photography that can tell 1,000 different stories all dependent on the viewer. As for inspiration, I guess the simple answer is my own emotions…when I pull my camera out I see the world through how I am feeling at that moment and what stands out to me is what expresses that best. I get started by turning my camera on. ;-)
Do you have another career outside of art, and if so, what is that? I do have a day job. I’m a program manager. I’m currently working to do that job less and less as I build my photography business. I do portrait photography as well as the more artistic prints I post on RedBubble. I’m also working on running some upcoming shows at a local Portland gallery, Word of Mouth Gallery. I love the creative part of my life.
What’s your favorite food? (or if you want to be more specific, if you had to select a favorite meal comprised of three separate foods, what would they be?) Mangoes and sticky rice. It’s a Thai dessert. If you’ve never tried it – you must!
How about if you had to do the same with colors and shades (color wheel and black-white)? Emotions? Favorite color is orange. Favorite emotion – I never thought of having a favorite…I like feeling emotions in general and the more difficult emotions in moderation. :)
favorite sound or noise? worst sound or noise? Favorite sound – the waves. Worst sound – the alarm in the morning.
The job you’d least like to have? The job you’d want to have if didn’t have your current one? Job I’d least like to have: any job that involved sitting still indoors for long periods of time. Most like to have: running my photography business.
How does your artwork express the change you’d like to see in the world and the people around you? What do you want people to get out of your work? I guess my artwork expresses my desire for everyone to be fully present and truly experience life to the fullest. I want people to stop and realize that if they don’t take a moment to look around and take it all in there is so much they will miss.
As an artist, do you get discouraged, and what is it that discourages you? What is it that brings you back to life? I absolutely get discouraged and sometimes when I’m discouraged is when I do my best work. Lack of connection is what discourages me, I suppose. What brings me back is connecting and feeling hopeful.
What is your favorite quote/motto? Whether you have one or not, what would you say if you knew the words would go down in history? It is hard to narrow down a favorite quotation to only one, but I’ll have to go with Vonnegut, “I want to stay as close to the edge as I can without going over. Out on the edge you see all kinds of things you can’t see from the center.”
Wow – these are some big questions! My motto… as long as it won’t kill me (or there is at least a low risk of death), why the hell not. :)
What is the worst thing you’ve ever had stolen from you (concrete or abstract)? Time.
What do you feel has been your greatest failure/regret in life? Temporarily deciding being prudent was more important than being happy.
What moment in your life are you most proud of? I don’t think I’ve had it yet – soon.
What are you passionate about? My daughters. Being creative.
Pick your favorite of each pair:
a. House or apartment? House
b. Red or blue? Red
c. Chinese food or Italian food? Italian
d. Blue eyes or brown eyes? Blue
e. Walk or run? Run
f. Urban or rural? Seaside :)
g. Modern or traditional? Both
h. Glue or tape? glue
i. Summer or winter? Summer
j. Jeans or pants? Jeans
k. Love or money? without question, love.

Name: Fyfe Fenris Frith Flotsam
Age: 17
Where are you from originally, and where do you live now? East Sussex, or Essex, I don’t know which, in England. Currently in Devonshire.
Single? Married? Kids? No, No, No.
How would you describe your style of work or what you are interested in? What inspires you? How do you get started creating? I think it would be limiting to be inspired by one set of things, and nothing else. I write and write, and write some more, and whatever comes out of it is a bonus. Quantity is key, maybe. My stories are about exactly what comes to my mind as and when, and in whatever style seems right. Much like my life, really. Who could ask for more?
Do you have another career outside of art, and if so, what is that? There is no career outside of art.
What’s your favorite food? (or if you want to be more specific, if you had to select a favorite meal comprised of three separate foods, what would they be?) Macaroni Cheese, Noodle soup and shark sandwiches- a la ‘blue lagoon’, Geneva.
How about if you had to do the same with colors and shades (color wheel and black-white)? Emotions? If I had to choose a colour to eat, it would be green, and the most delicious emotion is righteous indignation.
favorite sound or noise? worst sound or noise? Praise, Sirens.
The job you’d least like to have? The job you’d want to have if didn’t have your current one? That guy who sprays weeds with the innefectual and ridiculous-looking equipment. What are you doing, man? The weeds are winning.
An already-rich bank robber; they do it for love, not money. THAT is integrity.
How does your artwork express the change you’d like to see in the world and the people around you? What do you want people to get out of your work? Sensationalism is dead, God is dead, and mediocrity is no longer acceptable. Take joy in small things.
As an artist, do you get discouraged, and what is it that discourages you? What is it that brings you back to life? No, I am never discouraged. If I could be, I should never have become an artist. But a drop of the Cray-Thur will bring anyone back to life.
What is your favorite quote/motto? Whether you have one or not, what would you say if you knew the words would go down in history? ‘A casual stroll through the lunatic asylum shows that faith does not prove anything.’ ~ Friedrich Nietzsche.
What is the worst thing you’ve ever had stolen from you (concrete or abstract)? My bloody tent, at a festival. I needed that!
What do you feel has been your greatest failure/regret in life? I would be a very melancholic teen if I already had regrets.
What moment in your life are you most proud of? I fooled family, friends and medical staff for 6 months, and got away scott free.
What are you passionate about? Truth
