The Fine Art of Photography
A few recent rejections

Just been a bit curious about these. Here are my recent rejections: I was just going to let it go, but there have been a few pieces that have made their way into the group recently that I just don’t understand. Seems like some are getting through that aren’t to the high quality standards that some other artists are held to. If you’d like to know which ones those are, I would have not problem Bubblemailng the moderators, but I’d rather not call the artists or their pieces out on this forum. I’m sure there are many many submissions each day to the group and it gets hard to go through, but I’m sure that other works (maybe not mine) are rejected that are better artistically and technically than many that have been accepted recently. Seeing candid shots or snapshots make it in when you try to be original, clever, artistic, and follow the rules of this group when submitting… it just gets a bit frustrating. I know I’m among a vast group who have submitted many works and had many rejections. I know the thrill of seeing something get accepted… it is a great feeling! I do appreciate the moderators for their time spend working on this group and responding to members’ concerns. It’s nice to be in a group where members are encouraged to bring questions and comments to the attention of the moderators as well as other members, and for the moderators to be open-minded enough to listen and respond. Thank you for all your hard work. |

I know how you feel as i myself had had many rejections from this group. BUT, as the group name suggests this is not going to be an easy group. i asked a few photographers that i know the same question regrding some of my Rejects, this was what the said to me. never get wrapped up in your own photo’s, they are just pictures to other people. who have to make up thier own mind. Accept that people may view your photo differently to the way that you see it. ask yourself ’ when i took the photo, what was i trying to achieve, & did i succeed ? |

I like trying a photo out by submitting it to this group before risking putting it in to my camera club competitions. I figure it’s a good test and a much less humiliating experience than getting it hammered in public! |

Your last comment was very funny Nadine, I fought for an Image yesterday that was rejected, just trying to figure out the rhyme or reason. When I put my images out in front of the camera club I have in my mind a number I think they are going to come up with just to see if Im seeing what they are seeing. Im usualy right on. We have some very stiff competion in the group i belong to. They are always up for the challenge. I agree with Neil ask yourself what was I trying to achive and did I succeed. Others may not see it that way. But most will! PS I submitted an image today and it was accepted. |

Congrats on your accepted piece Patrick! That’s great news! As far as the group, I am familiar with the difficulty and challenge of this group (I wouldn’t still be in the group or try to submit work if I didn’t enjoy the challenge of it), as I stated I have have many tries, many rejections, however I also have had one photo accepted… and it was the most amazing feeling in the world. I don’t enter whatever photo strikes my fancy to enter, I only try to submit things that I am very proud of, that I have gotten good responses to by others, and that have succeeded in capturing what I wanted to when I took the shot. I don’t want to waste the moderators’ time or get myself set up to fail either. I have my own group I moderate and I know there are some people who will submit absolutely anything (sometimes not following group rules) even if it’s just a snapshot (by snapshot I’m meaning there’s clearly no attempt at composition, focus, lighting, timing, etc… or even any regard to the subject). I’m just looking for some insight on my photos.. but also maybe some thoughts on some of the recent accepted photography in the group. Some are very good, as usual, but I have seen some that look like they’ve just maybe slipped past. I know I have never seen a candid snapshot in the group before… and I see one now. Again maybe some maybe just slipped past, but I just get frustrated knowing that I (as well as many others who get rejected) submit work they have thought about and questioned before submitting to the group and see work that’s not up to the usual group standards get accepted. |

Hi Victoria – sorry about the delay. I’ve been away a few days. I didn’t reject either of these, so I won’t be able to say the actual reason. The jockey, I did see in the queue and looked at it a few times. I like it – particularly the background motion from the panning. The thing that stopped me from accepting it right away was that I couldn’t really find a sharp point to focus on. The yellow hat seems the sharpest bit of the photo. As difficult as this must have been to shoot (the speed is pretty obvious in the photo) when viewing a panned photo I like to have the main subject pretty well in focus. Since I didn’t remove it from the queue, the host who did will have to tell you why. The other one (the bench), I don’t know – I don’t remember seeing this one in the queue. The shrubs seem a little oversharpened which might be from RB’s display optimization rather than actually being oversharpened. I rather like it, although the bit on the upper right (the fence) is a distraction for me. Again, the host who removed this will have to say. |

I was the host that rejected the images, I’m afraid. |

Thank you Gracey and Mark. I appreciate the reply and explanation. I have had countless rejections, one accepted, but only recently disheartened because I am curious how the candid snapshots have gotten into the group, but oh well. I will continue trying regardless. I just know the strict standards that group members are held to. It’s a challenge. As for the bench shot, there was no sharpening done on it… must be Redbubble. It was a bit bright out when I took the photo and they were quite volumous thorn bushes on either side of the bench. The fence… meh… I’m a horseback rider and equine lover and fell in love with the white fences of Kentucky horse pastures so I guess I’m partial to it. lol. I appreciate the constructive criticism on the racehorse shot, too. This was my first attempt at shooting horse racing. It was a rather overcast/rainy day, so it was tough. They were moving fast and I couldn’t have the shutter speed as fast I would have liked anyway so I compensated by trying to pan. Hopefully next time I get to see a race I’ll have better conditions and I’ll try a shot like this again. Thank you hosts once again for your help. |
