I am not sure if this painting would be classed as a masterpiece. All I can say is I love the subject matter and I tried to depict a sense of movement, restlessness and heat.

While I was painting the zebras (which took about 2 months) I was overwhelmed with homesickness for Africa. It was particularly difficult during the long winter days and I had to stop when I saw snow flakes against the window pane. I just could not paint the scene until I could come to terms with what my mind was seeing and what was happening in the real world outside my window.

Zebra Stallions eventually turned out to be the most challenging painting but also the one that I still like to look at and find myself thinking: ‘Did I do that???’.
