OUR THIRD INTERVIEW WITH AN RB ARTIST IS WITH Terry Hinkle

1. What do you enjoy most about being on Redbubble?
I like the sense of community. I like “discovering” new artists with their personal styles and unique techniques. RedBubble has also been a motivating force for me. It has helped me to try new things and expand on my own technique. All of my art here on RedBubble has been created since January 2009. I had been away from the drawing board for many years and each new piece has been a test. Finally in the last couple of months, with the help of some new friends that I have met here on RedBubble, I feel confident in my artistic ability once again. I am having FUN!

2. What is something we don’t know about you?
I’m a great cook. I love good food and good wine. I was an owner in a restaurant once and also proudly recreated my Grandfather’s amazing marinade that is now sold all over the United States. My cousins run the company now in Oklahoma. Check it out at www.daddyhinkles.com

3. If time, money or family was not a hindrance…where would you go for your next vacation and why?
Now that I am painting again, maybe France… I love the light there. But the first thing that came to mind was Ireland. I have always been drawn to Celtic art and music.

4. If you were single, who is one person you would love to “hook up with” and why?
You are not going to believe this. My mind is blank. Maybe it is that my “hook up” of 29 years is still so good. Well… Megan Fox did creep in there for a split second.

5. Your favorite TV show/movie?
I know this sounds like an answer that you are supposed to give – but I do not watch TV very much. I do sit down in front of the tube ever so often to mindlessly flip through all of the 100 plus channels, but I do not have a television show that is a “must see” each and every week.

I am a big movie fan. I love adventure, sci-fi, animation, and mystery… most anything with a real good story. Unfortunately very few movies keep me guessing for long. One of my favorite movies is “Gladiator:” with Russell Crow, but my all time favorite has to be “An Affair to Remember” from 1957 with Cary Grant (as an artist) and Deborah Kerr.

6. What do you like about modeling/photography?
I was lucky to have worked in the advertising business with big clients with very large ad budgets that afforded me the opportunity to create campaigns where I could work with the best commercial photographers, and models in the world. I learned that what made a good model great, was her ability to project the perfect attitude or emotion from her eyes through the camera lens. You have heard about “making love to the camera”, this is what they can do. It is hard to teach. It is a gift. I try to capture that special “look” in the eyes of each of each of the women that I draw or paint.

7. One artist on RB you most admire and why?
I greatly admire the soft beauty of Padrino’s pastels, the unfiltered seductive emotion of Lilith-, The high Energy of Amanda G. Wright, the simple splendor of Mimi Yoon, the personal introspection of frenchblue, the bare beauty of the soul that Tony Ryan captures, and so many more that I discover every week. But for some time now I have been most intrigued by Lui Grande’s strong and beautiful work. He inspires me to go big and go bold… to just put it all out there, or as they say in football: “Leave it all out there on the field.” I like how you can feel the emotion in each raw brush stroke.

8. What do you hope to accomplish with your work/art?
I hope that the Energy that I have purposefully put into each work (and therefore resonates from each piece) will always provoke an emotional reaction from the viewer. It doesn’t necessarily need to be an immediate positive reaction either. I feel that for a work of art (painting, music, poetry, etc.) to be better than just “good’ it needs to communicate with the viewer on some deeper, sometimes subconscious level, and provoke an emotional response. That response can also be perceived as negative. A work of art that repulses you or is unsettling to you is doing a very good job.

A good example of the Energy that I put into each work is a piece titled: Open Your Heart Chakra. This pastel is part of a Chakra series where each painting carries the Energy Vibration of the depicted Chakra to help re-charge and empower the viewer. This particular piece of art carries the Heart Chakra’s higher Energy of love. The vibration of the highest creative heart Energy coming from this art will help empower each person who owns a copy to transform his or her world.

I have written a little piece called The Alchemy of Art that explains in more detail what I believe we can all accomplish with our work.

9. What is your favorite work that you have done?
Autumn was a turning point for me. It was the first time (since starting to draw again this year) that I put together a complete piece with a theme that had a foreground, midground, and background. She will always be a favorite of mine. But my new favorite is nautilus. With this piece I was able to finally use a softer rag paper, simpler under-painting and looser pastel strokes to create the solid shell that I have always loved and never before on canvas or paper been able to do it’s beauty justice.

10. If you could spend one day with any person… past or present… who would it be? Leonardo da Vinci. He has always fascinated me and I would like to get a better idea of how he saw the world around him. I would like to hear how he sustained and coped with his intense curiosity. Even though his interests knew no bounds, I would like to know what frustrated him and what ideas seemed to be out of his vast reach. He was a painter, scientist, and engineer interested in a wide range of subjects, from anatomy and biology to mechanics and hydraulics. His was, I think, the perfect creative mind. I feel that he died wishing that he had more time… that there were still some ideas and concepts that he needed to explore. This creative genius could teach me a lot.
