Name: Rachael Harms

From: Currently Santa Cruz but I’ve lived up and down California and in New Mexico.

Why photography? For me, photography satisfies my urge to savor a moment, to not let go. I think it’s so interesting to look at a photo, remember what you felt then and marvel at what’s changed.
Photography inspires me to try and live in such a way that the moments would make a good photograph.
And of course, I really like catching a moment that others find aesthetically pleasing to look at as well!

When did you start flexing that clicking finger? I became fascinated with photography and cameras around 9 and started pursuing it more (i.e. lugging my camera EVERYWHERE and trying to sell prints at local shops) at 14.

Greatest inspiration? My dad for always providing the means to pursue photography (he is an amazing photographer http://acutely.deviantart.com/ ) and my friends for leading me on photo-worthy adventures (many of whom are photographers as well).

One piece of kit you couldn’t do without? I’m really, really attached to my Tamron 18-200 lens. I barely ever switch it.

Tell us about the image chosen as our avatar (Wanderer): That picture was taken on a chilly night at a cliff in Santa Cruz with the ocean spraying up mist from far below. As my friend Paul was looking over the edge at the waves, I realized that the beautiful sunset behind him might make a good capture. I am thankful it was such a cold night with a clear atmosphere and that Paul stood so still for me.
