  • The Calm, the Storm and the Eternal Sun (Mixed Media Acrylics)- by Robert Dye

This work was created with a variety of mediums on a laminated lithograph. I sprayed the pre-existing frame, and selectively prime with gesso the landscape lithograph. The I turned the work upside down, and began painting in layers of color. Upon bringing the spatial areas to a greater definition of texture and value, I used some inks to add line work, and reflective surfaces. I then glued some pieces of my old dreadlocks to the central figure, and added more layers of acrylic paints. I used some gold paint in selective areas, and some areas retain the original lithograph image of a landscape. I really enjoy the loose, painted layers of color, and the exposed areas of gessoed surfaces. I also wanted to convey echoing line qualities in the veins and the bare trees. Please feel free to ask any further questions pertaining to concepts or materials that were used. The image is best represented on a large scale viewing, The dimensions of the piece are 36in. X 24in. It was initiated in 2007 and completed in 2008.

these 2x pieces form part of a series of works on paper that I produced during a quiet period when there was very little glass work happening. I made about 45 small works for an impromptu exhibtion at Knot gallery, which was an artist-run-space within Hibernian House, which is where my current studio is located And I thought i was the only one palying around with altering Art Cards! duh!

About This Group

Calling devotees and aficionados of all things altered! Altered Books, journals, Art cards, editions, originals (ACEOs), Artist trading cards (ATCs which are traded, not sold), etc. are just the beginning!

Whether you create collages or free standing assemblages, show us your best and finest altered and embellished work. Consider additions to your base of fabric, fibers, metal sheeting, wire, stitch, wax, dyes, beads, transparencies, text, etc.

collage – A picture or design created by adhering such basically flat elements as newspaper, wallpaper, printed text and illustrations, photographs, cloth, string, etc., to a flat surface, when the result becomes three-dimensional, and might also be called a relief sculpture / construction / assemblage. Most of the elements adhered in producing most collages are “found” materials. Introduced by the Cubist artists, this process was widely used by artists who followed, and is a familiar technique in contemporary art.

“Collage” was originally a French word, derived from the word coller, meaning “to paste.”

Assemblage sculpture – A three-dimensional composition made of various materials such as found objects, paper, wood, and textiles.

While I admire quality photo composites of many layers, if the photo collage is the work in its entirety, this is not the group for you. Photo collages can be part of a larger work, but aren’t the focus of this particular group. You may want to check out some sister groups such as Mixed Media or The Art of Photoshop
