Lake Gairdner-13Jun-7.45am by jiashu xu
Lake Gairdner-13Jun-7.45am Lake Gairdner is located in the State of South Australia, largest lake of a group of shallow depressions west of Lake Torrens in central South Australia, 550 kilometers northwest of Adelaide. It measures 160km long by 50km wide. Lying at the base of the Eyre Peninsula, Lake Gairdner is a dry salt pan intermittently filled with water. Discovred in 1857 almost simultaneously by Stephen Hack and Peter E. Warburton, it is named after Gordon Gairdner, former chief clerk in the Australian Department of the Colonial Office, London. It is a very remote location, the nearest town of Iron Knob being some 121 kilometers from the turn off to the Mt. Ive Station. The access to Lake Gairdner is limited. The private road in the Mt. Ive Station is the nearest one. The road is dirt, but quite good enough for normal cars unless it is too muddy. Ordinarily, the country is totally arid, and devoid of free water, surface or underground. This region is the home country of the Kokatha people, and traces of their occupation may still be found. Sacred sites are still visited for ceremonies. Mt. Ive Station provided a tour guide map to us to access the lake, but the signs on the road were not clear. We drove on the wrong road but finally we reached the lake at 4:00pm. The heavy rain two days earlier formed a shallow but immense lake. The sun from the gaps in the clouds glinted on the water surface. The colours of the dark orange rocks and the soft green bushes on the bank were subtly changing under the winter evening sun. Only about one hour after we arrived, the sun had set behind the hills and, soon after, the sky became totally dark. We returned to the lake on the morning of the third day around 7:00am. The sun had risen from Mt. Partridge in the east. The morning light glowed pleasantly on everything, but with sunrise, the warm tones were delicately turned to the colder tones. I took pictures with my digital cameras which automatically recorded the photographic details including the accurate time and date. After I returned to Adelaide, I selected 16 images of the Lake Gairdner and put them in time sequence order (as show below). The time details are on the black frames of each image. Through the sequence I would like to show my observations and thoughts during the 3 hours.
